New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spoke with the Chief Ministers of the Northeast states grappling with severe flooding caused by relentless monsoon rains. The virtual meeting aimed to review the flood situation and ensure seamless cooperation between the central and state governments in managing the ongoing disaster.
During the discussion, PM Modi expressed deep concern over the widespread damage and hardship caused by the floods, which have affected millions across Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and other northeastern states. He assured the leaders of the Centre’s unwavering support in providing necessary resources, including rescue teams, medical aid, and relief materials.
The Prime Minister urged the states to maintain constant communication with central agencies such as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Indian Armed Forces, which are actively involved in evacuation and relief work. He emphasized the importance of efficient resource allocation and timely information sharing to avoid duplication of efforts and speed up assistance to the most vulnerable populations.
PM Modi also highlighted the need for enhanced preparedness and early warning mechanisms to mitigate the impact of future floods. He encouraged the states to strengthen their disaster management frameworks by incorporating advanced technologies like satellite monitoring and real-time data analytics.
The Chief Ministers updated the Prime Minister on the ground realities, including the number of affected people, damage to infrastructure, and the status of relief camps. They appreciated the Centre’s prompt response and requested additional support for rebuilding damaged roads, bridges, and public utilities.
Health and sanitation emerged as key topics of concern during the meeting, as floodwaters have increased the risk of waterborne diseases. PM Modi urged the states to ensure adequate medical supplies, vaccination drives, and clean drinking water facilities in flood-affected areas.
The meeting concluded with the Prime Minister reiterating the government’s commitment to stand by the Northeast during this challenging time. He called for unity and cooperation between the Centre and states to overcome the crisis and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
Experts and officials note that such high-level coordination is vital in managing natural disasters effectively, especially in regions prone to frequent floods like the Northeast. The central government’s proactive approach aims to reduce the human and economic toll of such calamities.
Meanwhile, rescue and relief operations continue across the region, with teams working round the clock to evacuate stranded residents and provide essential supplies. Authorities have also launched awareness campaigns to educate people about flood safety measures and evacuation procedures.
As monsoon rains persist, the situation remains fluid, with continued monitoring of river levels and weather forecasts. The collaboration between the central and state governments is expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding lives and minimizing damage in the days ahead.
