The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also praised the development, highlighting its alignment with the Centre’s Sagarmala project, which aims to modernize India's port infrastructure and boost economic growth through port-led development.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala recorded a major milestone as it welcomed the world’s largest container ship, MSC Irina, marking its first official port call. The arrival of the ultra-large vessel is being hailed as a historic moment for India’s maritime infrastructure and a key step forward in transforming Vizhinjam into a global transshipment hub.

MSC Irina, operated by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), is one of the biggest container ships ever constructed. With a capacity of over 24,000 TEUs (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), the vessel spans approximately 400 meters in length and is capable of transporting massive volumes of cargo across continents. Its docking at Vizhinjam demonstrates the port's ability to accommodate and manage next-generation cargo vessels.

The ship’s arrival also marks the beginning of operational trials at Vizhinjam Port, which is being developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd. The port is designed to be India’s first deepwater container transshipment terminal with state-of-the-art facilities. With a natural depth of over 20 meters and proximity to international shipping routes, Vizhinjam has the potential to reduce India’s dependency on foreign ports for transshipment, such as Colombo or Singapore.

Speaking on the occasion, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan noted that the arrival of MSC Irina symbolizes the start of a new era in India’s maritime logistics. He said the port will enhance India's trade competitiveness, create thousands of jobs, and attract both domestic and foreign investment. The Chief Minister also appreciated the efforts of the Adani Group and various government departments for achieving this milestone.

Adani Ports officials emphasized the strategic importance of Vizhinjam, stating that it would offer efficient connectivity to the hinterlands of South India and become a key node in global shipping networks. The port’s location, just 10 nautical miles from the international east-west shipping route, allows vessels like MSC Irina to call with minimal deviation.

The port is expected to handle containers, bulk cargo, and even cruise vessels once fully operational. It also features automated cargo handling systems, green port initiatives, and plans for customs and logistics hubs that will support value-added services.

Maritime experts believe the arrival of MSC Irina will serve as a strong signal to global shipping lines about the reliability and readiness of Vizhinjam. They point out that India has long needed a port that can compete at the scale of global transshipment hubs, and Vizhinjam’s natural advantages give it a competitive edge.

The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways also praised the development, highlighting its alignment with the Centre’s Sagarmala project, which aims to modernize India's port infrastructure and boost economic growth through port-led development.

In conclusion, the docking of MSC Irina at Vizhinjam is more than just a symbolic event—it signals India’s readiness to enter a new phase of maritime logistics, trade efficiency, and global port competitiveness. The success of this port will play a vital role in enhancing India's stature in the global shipping industry.

The Chief Minister also appreciated the efforts of the Adani Group and various government departments for achieving this milestone.
