OpenAI has started rolling out GPT-6 in ChatGPT with a major interface update called Intelligent UI. The new feature is designed to move ChatGPT beyond traditional text based conversations by allowing responses to include interactive visuals, diagrams, charts, forms, buttons and task specific tools.
OpenAI announced the update on October 7, 2026, describing Intelligent UI as a new capability that allows ChatGPT to select different ways of presenting information depending on the user's question. Instead of providing every answer in the same text format, GPT-6 can decide when a visual explanation or interactive element would be more useful.
The change is intended to make information easier to understand and interact with. For example, a complex explanation can be presented through an interactive diagram, while a comparison may be displayed in a side by side format. A travel plan could include a map, while a practical calculation could be turned into an interactive tool.
OpenAI says users can also ask ChatGPT to create tools directly inside a conversation. Examples highlighted by the company include a retirement savings calculator, a bill splitting tool and a simple game. These experiences are designed to allow users to enter information and interact with the result without leaving the ChatGPT conversation.
Another important change is that Intelligent UI does not force every response to become visual. OpenAI says GPT-6 has been trained to determine when interactive elements add value and when a conventional text response is more appropriate. This means a simple question can still receive a straightforward answer, while a question that benefits from visual explanation may receive a richer interface.
The company says GPT-6 uses a library of native components along with a compiler that allows interfaces to appear progressively as the model generates them. This approach is intended to keep the experience responsive instead of making users wait for an entire interactive response to be completed before anything appears.
GPT-6 also brings changes to the way ChatGPT handles longer or more complex requests. OpenAI says the model can begin answering while it continues to think or use tools. Users may therefore see an initial response before the complete result is ready, with additional information appearing as processing continues.
The latest model is also aimed at improving everyday reasoning and response speed. OpenAI says GPT-6 provides faster delivery of its intelligence and is better at recognizing and communicating the limits of its capabilities, including situations where it does not have enough information or the necessary tools to complete a task.
The rollout is taking place globally. According to OpenAI, GPT-6 with Intelligent UI initially became available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users in the Chat tab. The company said the rollout would expand to Free and Go users from October 8. Enterprise access can depend on workspace administrator settings.
For paid users, GPT-6 in ChatGPT is powered by GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go users receive GPT-6 Luna. OpenAI's Help Center says Intelligent UI works across supported reasoning levels from Instant through Extra High, while the Pro reasoning option powered by GPT-6 Astra does not support Intelligent UI. Availability can vary according to the user's plan and workspace configuration.
The update also reflects a broader shift in how artificial intelligence companies are designing chatbot interfaces. Instead of treating AI as a system that simply generates text, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as an interface that can adapt its presentation to the task.
This could be particularly useful for education, planning, calculations and explanations of technical subjects. A learner could interact with a diagram rather than reading a long explanation, while someone planning expenses could use an interactive calculator generated inside the conversation.
OpenAI says users can also reduce visual elements through ChatGPT settings if they prefer a simpler experience. The Intelligent UI feature is currently focused on the Chat experience and is not available in Voice.
The GPT-6 rollout therefore represents both a model upgrade and a change in the way ChatGPT presents information. The emphasis is not only on generating more capable answers but also on selecting a more suitable format for each task.
As OpenAI continues developing Intelligent UI, the company says its longer term goal is to allow ChatGPT to create more interfaces around everyday tasks. Rather than requiring users to learn fixed software interfaces, OpenAI envisions AI systems that can adapt the interface to what a person is trying to accomplish.
