Samsung Expects Global AI Memory Chip Shortage to Continue Until 2028

Samsung Electronics has projected that the global shortage of artificial intelligence memory chips may continue until 2028, reflecting the rapid expansion of AI technologies and the growing demand for high performance semiconductor components. The company said demand from AI developers, cloud service providers and data center operators continues to exceed available manufacturing capacity.

According to Samsung, the increasing adoption of generative artificial intelligence, large language models and advanced machine learning applications has significantly accelerated the need for high bandwidth memory and other specialized AI chips. These components are essential for training and operating modern AI systems that require enormous computing power.

Technology companies around the world are investing billions of dollars in AI infrastructure, including large scale data centers equipped with graphics processing units, AI accelerators and advanced memory solutions. This surge in investment has created unprecedented demand for semiconductor manufacturers capable of supplying the specialized components needed for AI computing.

Samsung noted that demand is expected to intensify further during 2027 before supply conditions gradually improve. Building additional semiconductor fabrication facilities requires significant investment, advanced manufacturing equipment and years of development, making it difficult for production capacity to expand quickly enough to meet rapidly growing demand.

High bandwidth memory has become one of the most critical technologies supporting artificial intelligence workloads. These memory chips are designed to provide extremely fast data transfer speeds, enabling AI processors to efficiently handle complex computations used in training and deploying advanced AI models.

The global semiconductor industry has witnessed strong growth driven by increasing adoption of artificial intelligence across industries such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, automotive technology, cloud computing and scientific research. As organizations continue integrating AI into their operations, demand for advanced chips is expected to remain elevated.
