The tool is aimed at demonstrating how generative AI can be used not just for text and images, but also for building dynamic digital spaces.

Google has introduced Project Genie, a new artificial intelligence based web application designed to let users create and explore interactive virtual worlds with ease. The announcement was made by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who described the project as a step forward in making AI more creative, immersive and accessible. Project Genie is currently available as a prototype and is being rolled out to AI Ultra subscribers in the United States.

At its core, Project Genie allows users to generate virtual environments using simple text prompts or images. Once created, these worlds can be explored in real time, offering an interactive experience rather than static visuals. The tool is aimed at demonstrating how generative AI can be used not just for text and images, but also for building dynamic digital spaces.

Project Genie is powered by a combination of Google’s advanced AI technologies, including Genie 3, Nano Banana Pro and Gemini. Genie 3 is responsible for generating coherent and interactive environments, while Nano Banana Pro helps optimise performance and responsiveness. Gemini, Google’s flagship multimodal AI model, plays a key role in understanding user inputs across text and visual formats, allowing the system to interpret prompts more accurately.

According to Google, users can describe a setting such as a forest, city, or futuristic landscape, or upload an image as a reference. The AI then builds a virtual world based on that input, complete with navigable elements. Users can move through these spaces, interact with objects and experience changes in real time, making the experience feel more like a digital simulation than a traditional AI generated image.

Sundar Pichai highlighted that Project Genie reflects Google’s broader vision of AI as a tool for creativity and exploration. He noted that such technologies could eventually support applications in education, game development, training simulations and digital storytelling. By lowering the technical barriers, the tool allows creators without coding or design expertise to experiment with building virtual environments.

While Project Genie is currently limited in availability, its prototype status suggests that Google is testing user feedback and performance before a wider release. The company has not yet announced a timeline for global availability or expansion beyond AI Ultra subscribers. However, the early rollout indicates strong interest in immersive AI experiences.

Industry experts see Project Genie as part of a growing trend where artificial intelligence moves beyond content generation into interactive and experiential domains. Virtual world creation has traditionally required complex software and skilled teams. AI driven tools like Project Genie could significantly reduce development time and costs.

Google has emphasised that Project Genie is still in its early stages and that improvements will continue. Future updates may include richer environments, more detailed interactions and broader accessibility across regions and devices.

As competition in the AI space intensifies, Project Genie positions Google as a key player in the emerging field of AI powered virtual worlds. The project underscores how artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping the way people create, explore and interact with digital environments.
