This steady-state theory proposed that matter is continuously created in the universe, challenging the prevailing view that the universe began from a singular explosive origin.

Jayant Vishnu Narlikar is one of India’s most respected astrophysicists, whose name is synonymous with brilliance, originality, and humility. Often described as a “quiet revolutionary” in the world of science, Narlikar’s contributions to cosmology have shaped theoretical physics in profound ways. While his soft-spoken personality kept him away from the limelight, his intellectual presence continues to be deeply felt in academic circles.

Born in 1938, Narlikar was the son of renowned mathematician Vishnu Vasudev Narlikar. He pursued his higher education at Cambridge University, where he studied under the legendary astrophysicist Fred Hoyle. Together, they developed the Hoyle–Narlikar theory of gravitation, an alternative model to the widely accepted Big Bang theory. This steady-state theory proposed that matter is continuously created in the universe, challenging the prevailing view that the universe began from a singular explosive origin.

Though the Hoyle–Narlikar theory did not replace the Big Bang theory, it was significant for pushing the boundaries of cosmological thought. It emphasized the need for open scientific debate and showed that science progresses through the testing of bold new ideas. Jayant Narlikar's work in this area earned him global recognition and respect for his courage to question dominant theories.

On returning to India, Narlikar dedicated himself to the cause of Indian science. He became the founding director of the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune, which has since grown into a premier institute for astrophysical research. Under his leadership, IUCAA became a hub for collaboration among students, researchers, and international experts.

What sets Narlikar apart is not just his scientific achievements but his passionate effort to popularize science. He wrote extensively in English and Marathi, publishing both academic texts and books for general readers. His children’s books, essays, and science fiction stories have inspired young minds across India. Narlikar believed that science should not remain confined to laboratories; it must be accessible and exciting for everyone.

Throughout his career, he received numerous honors, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, in recognition of his contributions to science and education. Despite these accolades, Narlikar maintained a grounded lifestyle, focusing on education, mentorship, and outreach.

In today’s fast-paced world of scientific innovation, Jayant Narlikar’s story is a reminder that intellectual courage, quiet determination, and a commitment to knowledge can make a lasting impact. His legacy is not only in the theories he proposed but also in the curiosity he sparked among generations of scientists and students.

As India continues to advance in space research and cosmology, Narlikar’s life remains a beacon for those who believe in the power of science to question, explore, and enlighten.
