Unique Identification Authority of India has extended the deadline for free Aadhaar document updates through its online portal, allowing residents more time to update their information without paying service charges. The move is aimed at improving the accuracy of Aadhaar records and encouraging users to maintain updated identification details in the national database.

According to reports, Aadhaar holders can continue using the myAadhaar portal to upload and update supporting documents linked to their Aadhaar profiles. The free online update facility mainly covers proof of identity and proof of address documents submitted digitally through the official platform.

Officials have clarified that biometric information such as fingerprints, iris scans, and facial photographs cannot be updated online. These changes must still be completed physically at authorized Aadhaar enrolment or update centres across the country.

Aadhaar is one of India’s most widely used identity systems and is linked to multiple government services, banking facilities, tax filings, mobile connections, welfare schemes, and financial transactions. Maintaining updated details in Aadhaar records is considered important to ensure smooth access to public and private services.

The extension of the free update deadline is expected to benefit millions of users who may not have updated their records for several years. Authorities have repeatedly encouraged residents to verify and update their Aadhaar information to avoid discrepancies or authentication-related issues.

The myAadhaar portal allows users to access several digital services including downloading Aadhaar cards, checking update status, locking biometrics, generating virtual IDs, and updating documents online. Aadhaar holders can log into the portal using their Aadhaar number and OTP verification linked to their registered mobile number.

Experts say accurate identification databases play an important role in reducing fraud, improving service delivery, and strengthening digital governance systems. Updated Aadhaar records help prevent identity mismatches during authentication for banking, subsidies, and other official services.

Government agencies and financial institutions increasingly rely on Aadhaar-based verification systems for digital identity authentication. Inaccurate or outdated information may sometimes lead to difficulties in accessing welfare schemes, opening accounts, or completing KYC procedures.

Officials have advised users to ensure that uploaded documents are clear, valid, and match the details already present in Aadhaar records. Incorrect or incomplete submissions may result in delays or rejection during the verification process.

The Aadhaar ecosystem has expanded significantly over the years and is now integrated with various digital governance initiatives across India. Authorities continue promoting online services to improve convenience and reduce the need for physical visits wherever possible.

Technology experts also highlight the importance of cybersecurity and privacy protection in digital identity systems. Aadhaar users are regularly advised to avoid sharing sensitive personal information with unauthorized individuals or suspicious platforms.

The extension of the free update facility is expected to increase participation from users in rural and urban areas who may have postponed document updates earlier. Digital access through online platforms has also improved convenience for people seeking to manage their Aadhaar details remotely.

Biometric updates, however, remain an in-person process due to security and verification requirements. Children reaching certain age milestones and individuals with changes in biometric characteristics are generally advised to update biometric data periodically.

Authorities continue to encourage residents to verify Aadhaar details regularly and use official UIDAI channels for updates and services. Citizens are also advised to check official notifications for revised deadlines, service guidelines, and update procedures.

The latest extension reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen the reliability and efficiency of India’s digital identity infrastructure while ensuring smoother access to government and financial services for Aadhaar users nationwide.
