WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new passkey based device linking feature that could make it easier for users to connect their accounts to laptops, tablets and other companion devices. The feature is currently under development and is expected to offer an alternative to the existing QR code based login process used for WhatsApp Web and linked devices.
At present, users typically link a secondary device by opening WhatsApp on their smartphone, accessing the Linked Devices section and scanning a QR code displayed on the companion device. While this method has been widely adopted, Meta is reportedly exploring a more streamlined authentication process using passkey technology.
Passkeys are a modern authentication method designed to replace traditional passwords with secure cryptographic credentials stored on a user's trusted device. Authentication generally relies on biometric verification such as fingerprint recognition, facial recognition or a device PIN. Because passkeys eliminate the need for manually entering passwords, they are considered both more convenient and more resistant to phishing attacks.
According to reports, the proposed feature would allow eligible Android users to link new devices using passkey authentication instead of scanning a QR code. This could simplify the setup process while maintaining WhatsApp's end to end encryption and existing account security protections.
The introduction of passkeys aligns with a broader industry trend in which major technology companies are adopting passwordless authentication standards developed by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium. Companies including Google, Apple and Microsoft have expanded support for passkeys across their platforms to improve both security and user experience.
