WhatsApp Launches New Parental Controls for Teenagers

WhatsApp has introduced a new set of optional parental controls for teenage accounts, giving parents additional ways to guide how their children use the messaging platform. The new tools allow parents and teenagers to set up certain safety and privacy preferences together.

The controls cover several parts of the WhatsApp experience, including privacy settings, group activity, Channels, Status updates and Meta AI. WhatsApp says the new tools are designed to give families more oversight while keeping personal conversations private.

The new parental controls are being rolled out gradually, which means they may not be available on every account or in every region immediately. WhatsApp's Help Center says parents or guardians must link their account to the teenager's WhatsApp account to use the controls.

What Can Parents Control on WhatsApp

Parents can manage several privacy settings on their teenager's WhatsApp account. These include choosing who can see the teenager's profile photo and who can add the teenager to WhatsApp groups.

If a teenager later wants to make certain parent managed settings less restrictive, parental approval through a PIN set by the parent is required.

This gives families a way to establish privacy preferences while allowing parents to remain involved in decisions about the teenager's account.

Parents Can Receive Group Activity Notifications

Another important addition is activity notifications related to WhatsApp groups.

Parents can receive notifications when their teenager joins or creates a group, leaves a group or when a group the teenager is part of grows significantly in size. These notifications provide information about selected account activity without giving parents access to the actual conversations inside those groups.

This distinction is important because the parental controls are designed to provide information about certain activities rather than provide parents with access to private chats.

Control Over WhatsApp Channels

Parents can also manage how their teenager uses WhatsApp Channels.

According to the WhatsApp Help Center, parents can choose whether a teenager can view all Channels, only parent approved Channels or no Channels. Parents can also control whether the teenager is allowed to create Channels.

These settings can be changed from the Parental Controls section after entering the parent PIN.

Status Privacy Controls

The new controls also cover WhatsApp Status updates.

Parents can manage whose Status updates their teenager can see. Available options include allowing the teenager to see Status updates from contacts, excluding selected contacts, allowing selected contacts or restricting Status visibility altogether.

Parents can also manage who can see their teenager's Status updates. These settings can be adjusted through the Parental Controls section and require the parent PIN.

Meta AI Controls for Teenagers

WhatsApp has also added parental controls for the Meta AI experience.

Parents can choose between the standard experience and a stricter Limited Content option. WhatsApp says the standard setting allows teenagers to discuss topics generally aligned with content ratings for users aged 13 and above.

The Limited Content option places additional restrictions on the topics a teenager can discuss with Meta AI. Some Meta AI features that use Private Processing are unavailable when the Limited setting is enabled.

How to Set Up WhatsApp Parental Controls

Setting up the new controls begins on the teenager's phone.

First, open WhatsApp on the teenager's device and go to Settings.

Next, select Parental Controls and tap the option to continue.

The parent or guardian then needs to confirm the teenager's birth date and follow the instructions to link the account to the parent's WhatsApp account.

The parent must verify that they are an adult and create a parent PIN. This PIN is used to protect the parental control settings.

WhatsApp's official parental controls page provides the setup instructions and notes that the feature is being rolled out gradually.

How Parents Can Change the Settings

After the parental controls are linked, parents can access the relevant settings from the teenager's WhatsApp account.

To manage settings, open WhatsApp on the teenager's phone and go to Settings followed by Parental Controls. Enter the parent PIN and select the feature that needs to be changed.

Depending on the feature, parents can manage privacy settings, Status, Channels, Meta AI and other available controls.

The exact options may depend on the feature and the version of WhatsApp available on the account.

Parents Cannot Read Private WhatsApp Messages

One of the important points about the new controls is that they do not give parents access to their teenager's private conversations.

WhatsApp says personal messages and calls remain protected by end to end encryption. This means people outside the conversation, including parents and WhatsApp, cannot read the content of private messages or listen to private calls through these parental controls.

Parents can receive selected activity notifications, but those notifications do not provide the contents of private conversations.

Parental Controls Are Optional

WhatsApp says the new parental controls are optional. Families can decide whether to use the controls and can adjust or switch them off.

The company says the tools are intended to support conversations between parents and teenagers about safe and responsible use of WhatsApp rather than provide parents with access to private communications.

Availability in India

WhatsApp has announced the new controls as part of its broader rollout for teen accounts. However, the WhatsApp Help Center states that parental controls are being rolled out gradually and may not yet be available in every region or account.

Indian users should therefore update WhatsApp to the latest available version and check the Parental Controls option under Settings on the teenager's account.

If the option does not appear, the feature may not yet have reached that particular account or region.

What Parents Should Know

The new WhatsApp parental controls provide several types of oversight without giving parents access to private messages and calls.

Parents can manage selected privacy settings, receive certain group activity notifications and control how teenagers use Channels, Status and Meta AI. A parent set PIN provides additional protection for settings managed by parents.

The feature is part of WhatsApp's broader efforts to provide age appropriate experiences for younger users. WhatsApp has also introduced other safety and privacy measures across its platform in recent months.

For families in India, the availability of the new controls may depend on the ongoing rollout. Parents who want to use the feature should keep WhatsApp updated and check the Parental Controls section regularly.
