The Delhi High Court on Tuesday issued notices to Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and several other leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party in connection with a criminal contempt case involving alleged defamatory and “vilifying” social media posts targeting a judge.
The notices were issued by a division bench comprising Justice Navin Chawla and Justice Ravinder Dudeja. The bench took up the matter concerning alleged remarks made against Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma in relation to proceedings connected with the Delhi excise policy case.
According to court proceedings, the contempt petition alleges that certain social media posts and public comments made by AAP leaders attempted to undermine the dignity and credibility of the judiciary. The petition claimed that the posts contained defamatory remarks directed at the judge while legal proceedings related to the excise policy matter were ongoing.
The High Court granted four weeks to the political leaders named in the case to submit their responses and explanations before the court. The matter has been listed for further hearing on August 4.
