France has formally submitted its technical and commercial proposal to India for the supply of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft under the Indian Air Force's Multi Role Fighter Aircraft programme. The proposed defence deal, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 3.25 lakh crore, is one of the largest military aviation procurement projects currently under consideration by India.
The proposal marks an important step in India's ongoing efforts to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force while promoting indigenous defence manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. The programme is expected to focus on domestic production, technology transfer and increased participation by Indian defence companies.
According to the proposal, a significant number of the fighter aircraft are expected to be manufactured in India through collaboration between the French aerospace industry and Indian partners. Such an arrangement is intended to enhance local manufacturing capacity, create employment opportunities and develop advanced aerospace capabilities within the country.
The Indian Air Force has projected the requirement for additional multi role fighter aircraft to address the gradual retirement of older fleets and to maintain its operational strength. The Rafale fighter aircraft is a twin engine multirole combat aircraft capable of carrying out air superiority, ground attack, reconnaissance and maritime strike missions. It is equipped with advanced avionics, radar systems, electronic warfare capabilities and precision guided weapon integration, making it suitable for multiple operational requirements.
India already operates Rafale fighter aircraft inducted under an earlier government to government agreement with France. The existing fleet has been deployed at strategically important air bases and has become an integral part of the Indian Air Force's operational capabilities.
The proposed procurement of 114 additional aircraft will undergo a detailed evaluation process by the Ministry of Defence and the Indian Air Force. The technical proposal will be examined to determine whether it meets the operational requirements specified by the Indian Air Force. This assessment will be followed by commercial evaluation and negotiations before any final decision is taken.
