The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking directions to prevent leaders of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam from making public statements regarding the Karur stampede case. During the hearing, the Court observed that judicial forums should not be used as political platforms and declined to grant the relief sought in the petition.
The petition requested that the Court restrain senior leaders of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, including Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Minister Aadhav Arjuna, from commenting publicly on the Karur stampede incident. The petitioner also raised objections regarding the Chief Minister's proposed visit to the families of those who lost their lives in the incident.
While hearing the matter, the Supreme Court questioned the legal basis for such a request. The bench remarked that it would not be appropriate for the judiciary to regulate what a Chief Minister should or should not say in the course of public life. The judges observed that courts cannot ordinarily issue directions governing political statements unless a specific legal issue requiring judicial intervention is established.
The Court further stated that judicial proceedings should not become platforms for political disputes. The bench also expressed reservations regarding the challenge to the Chief Minister's proposed visit to the families affected by the Karur stampede. The Court questioned why such a visit should become the subject of judicial proceedings and indicated that such issues did not warrant intervention by the apex court in the absence of any identifiable legal violation.
After considering the submissions made during the hearing, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition. The Court did not issue any directions restricting public statements by political leaders in connection with the Karur stampede case.
