Due to the mountainous terrain and geological sensitivity of the region, even moderate earthquakes can be felt over large distances.

A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 was recorded in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district in the early hours of Monday, causing tremors across the region. The earthquake occurred at approximately 5.35 am, according to data released by the National Centre for Seismology. The quake was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, which led to noticeable shaking in several areas.

The epicentre of the earthquake was located in the Pattan area of Baramulla district. The National Centre for Seismology identified the epicentral region using reference points close to Gulmarg and west of Srinagar. Due to the shallow depth and geographic spread, the tremors were felt not only in parts of Jammu and Kashmir but also across the Line of Control in neighbouring regions of Pakistan.

Residents in Baramulla, Srinagar, and surrounding districts reported feeling brief but noticeable tremors. In some areas, people stepped out of their homes as a precautionary measure. However, there were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property. Local authorities stated that they are assessing the situation and remain alert for any aftershocks.

The National Centre for Seismology further noted that the location of the quake was approximately 84 kilometres west of Pahalgam and about 164 kilometres west southwest of Kargil. This indicates that the seismic activity affected a broad region across the Kashmir Valley and adjoining high altitude areas. Due to the mountainous terrain and geological sensitivity of the region, even moderate earthquakes can be felt over large distances.

Jammu and Kashmir lies in a seismically active zone, making it prone to frequent earthquakes of varying intensity. Experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for earthquake preparedness and adherence to safety guidelines, especially in vulnerable areas with dense populations and older infrastructure.

Officials from the disaster management department said that emergency teams are on standby and that there is no cause for immediate concern. They have advised residents to remain calm and follow safety protocols in the event of further tremors. Authorities also urged people to avoid spreading rumours and rely only on official information.

Seismologists continue to monitor seismic activity in the region to assess the possibility of aftershocks. While moderate earthquakes are common in the Himalayan belt, experts stress the importance of preparedness and regular safety drills to minimise risks.

As of now, normal life continues across the affected areas, and officials have confirmed that there has been no disruption to essential services. Further updates will be issued if any new developments occur.
