In light of the ongoing assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has intervened to stop the appointment of Army Colonel Vikrant Prasher as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) for Training and Special Operations. The commission flagged the appointment as a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which prohibits transfers and postings of officials during elections.
Without commenting on the rationale behind this appointment, the ECI instructed the J&K administration to put the order on hold and restore the status quo if the appointment had already been implemented. A detailed compliance report explaining why the appointment was made without the ECI’s clearance is required by 11:00 am on October 1, 2024. This move comes as the Union Territory undergoes its multi-phase assembly elections, with voting concluding on October 1 and results expected by October 8, 2024
