Jammu and Kashmir police recently seized an abandoned drone in Poonch district, near the Pakistan border, raising initial security concerns. The drone was discovered in a field in Gohled village, belonging to a local resident, Mohd Shafiq. The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the J&K police acted promptly after receiving intelligence inputs and secured the device.
Officials clarified that the drone was a civilian model, commonly used for aerial photography during weddings, social functions, and personal events, and not a defense-grade equipment. Despite this, the discovery near the Mendhar sector of the border triggered precautionary measures and a brief security alert due to the sensitive nature of the location. Authorities have assured that the device poses no military threat but emphasized the need for continued vigilance in border areas to prevent misuse of civilian technology.
In a separate incident, security forces in Udhampur district, located over 270 km from Poonch, recovered seven rounds of magazines for an AK-series rifle. The ammunition was found strewn across a local area, prompting a local investigation to determine the source and intent. Officials noted that such recoveries, though rare, underscore the constant monitoring and intelligence-led operations carried out by police and paramilitary forces in the region.
Security experts highlight that drones, while increasingly used for recreational and civilian purposes, can also be misused for surveillance or espionage in sensitive border areas. The J&K police have thus strengthened monitoring and established protocols to quickly respond to the presence of unmanned aerial vehicles in strategic locations. The quick action by SOG personnel prevented any potential security lapse and reassured residents about the authorities’ readiness.
The Poonch and Udhampur districts are part of Jammu and Kashmir’s highly sensitive zones, where regular security patrols, intelligence gathering, and rapid response units are deployed to mitigate risks. The recovery of the drone and AK ammunition serves as a reminder of the complex security environment, requiring constant cooperation between local communities and law enforcement agencies.
Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activity, including abandoned equipment or unusual items near border areas, to assist in preventive measures. They also reiterated that civilian drones must be used responsibly and registered as per aviation regulations to avoid unnecessary alarm or potential legal issues.
Overall, the twin recoveries in Poonch and Udhampur highlight the proactive role of security forces in maintaining safety along sensitive borders. While the drone was ultimately identified as harmless, the incidents underscore the importance of intelligence-led operations, community awareness, and rapid response mechanisms in protecting critical areas of Jammu and Kashmir from potential threats.
