Security forces have stepped up an ongoing anti terror operation in the snowbound Chatroo area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district as efforts continue to track and neutralise militants believed to be hiding in dense forest regions. The operation is being carried out amid harsh weather conditions, including heavy snowfall exceeding two feet in several areas.

According to official sources, the search operation was initially launched on January 18 following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants in the Sonnar forest area near Mandral Singhpora. The operation led to a fierce exchange of fire between security forces and the militants. During the encounter, a paratrooper lost his life and seven other soldiers sustained injuries.

Subsequent encounters were reported on January 22 and January 25. However, the militants managed to evade capture by taking advantage of thick forest cover, rugged terrain, and adverse weather conditions. Security agencies believe that two to three militants affiliated with the Jaish e Mohammad group are still hiding in the area.

Despite the challenges posed by heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, joint teams of the Army, police, and paramilitary forces have continued the operation. Additional troops have been deployed to strengthen the cordon and prevent the militants from moving out of the region. Aerial surveillance and ground level tracking are also being used to locate their movement.

To ensure operational security, authorities have temporarily suspended mobile internet services within a six kilometre radius of Singhpora, Chingam, and Chatroo. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to prevent the misuse of communication networks by anti national elements during the operation. Essential communication services remain available through alternative arrangements.

Security officials stated that the terrain and weather have significantly slowed movement, but the forces are determined to continue the search. Snow accumulation has made forest paths slippery and visibility poor, increasing the risks for personnel on the ground. Despite this, troops are maintaining their positions and conducting systematic searches.

Local authorities have advised residents in nearby villages to remain indoors and cooperate with security forces. Schools in the affected areas are reportedly monitoring the situation, while administrative teams remain on standby to provide assistance if required.

Officials emphasised that such operations are carried out based on credible intelligence inputs and are aimed at ensuring the safety and security of civilians. They added that security forces are trained to operate in extreme conditions and will continue the mission until the area is fully sanitised.

The situation remains under close watch as the operation enters a critical phase. Further updates are expected once the search progresses or any significant development takes place.
