In Doda Gandoh, Jammu & Kashmir, electric auto-rickshaw drivers staged a protest outside the Power Development Department (PDD) office over what they described as “unaffordable” electricity bills. The drivers demanded immediate relief from bills that, according to them, had reached Rs 14,000, far exceeding their monthly capacity to pay.

The protestors said that high electricity charges severely affect their earnings and put daily operations at risk. Most electric auto-rickshaw operators rely on small daily incomes, and sudden high bills create financial stress. Drivers urged the PDD to review and revise the billing system to ensure charges are fair and manageable.

Local representatives and residents joined the drivers, emphasizing that electric vehicles are critical for sustainable urban transport and affordable commuting. They highlighted that penalizing electric vehicle operators with heavy bills could discourage the use of cleaner energy alternatives, ultimately affecting environmental and civic goals.

During the protest, drivers held placards and appealed to the authorities for immediate relief. Several drivers shared their experiences, explaining that despite working long hours, they struggled to manage daily expenses along with the high electricity bills. “We want to provide affordable rides to the public, but these bills are beyond our reach,” said one protestor.

The PDD has been approached for clarification regarding the unusually high bills. Officials are reportedly examining the complaint to determine whether errors in meter readings or other factors have contributed to the spike. Drivers requested that any discrepancies be corrected and that a structured plan be introduced to support electric vehicle operators.

Residents also expressed support for the protest, noting that auto-rickshaws are an essential means of transportation in Doda Gandoh. They stressed that easing electricity costs for drivers would not only help livelihoods but also maintain affordable transport services for the community.

The protest reflects a growing concern among electric vehicle operators across Jammu & Kashmir regarding operational costs. As electric vehicles become more common, authorities face the challenge of balancing sustainable energy promotion with affordable access to power for users.

Driver representatives have proposed measures such as reduced tariffs for electric vehicle charging, installment-based bill payments, and immediate investigation of unusually high bills. They warned that without timely intervention, the livelihoods of numerous drivers and the accessibility of public transport could be negatively impacted.

The Doda Gandoh protest underscores the need for clear policies and regulatory oversight to support the growing electric vehicle sector. Drivers and locals are hoping for prompt action from the PDD and government authorities to resolve the issue, ensuring both sustainable transportation and financial relief for electric auto operators.
