National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary escaped unharmed after a gunshot was fired at a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area of Jammu on Wednesday evening. Police later identified the suspect as Kamal Singh Jamwal who is reported to be a resident of Jammu. Investigators are examining the circumstances under which the individual was able to enter the venue with a firearm.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary spoke to reporters after the incident and confirmed that both he and Farooq Abdullah were safe. However he described the situation as a serious security concern and said that authorities must examine how such an incident occurred at an event where senior political leaders were present.
Choudhary also pointed out that the gathering included high profile attendees including a former chief minister and other government officials. He said the presence of senior leaders meant that strict security arrangements were expected at the venue. The deputy chief minister called it a matter that requires thorough review by law enforcement agencies.
Police officials have begun a detailed investigation to understand the background of the accused and the possible reasons behind the gunshot incident. Security personnel are also reviewing surveillance footage from the area and questioning witnesses who were present during the event.
Authorities are expected to examine the security arrangements made for the function as part of the investigation. Ensuring proper safety measures at public gatherings where political leaders are present is considered an important responsibility of local law enforcement agencies.

Officials said the motive behind the gunshot will become clearer once the questioning of the suspect and the collection of evidence are completed.
Authorities have assured that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the safety of public representatives and guests at similar events in the future. Police continue to investigate the case and further details are expected to emerge after the completion of preliminary inquiries.
