In an exclusive interview, former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah has expressed his strong discontent over the abrogation of Article 370, calling it an act of "revenge" against the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah stated that the unilateral decision to revoke the special status of the region was not just an attack on its autonomy but also a betrayal of the promises made to its people at the time of Jammu and Kashmir's accession to India.
Abdullah accused the central government of eroding the rights of Kashmiris, leaving them politically vulnerable and without recourse. He emphasized that the decision was imposed without consulting the local populace, further deepening the divide between Kashmir and the rest of the country. "It feels like the government wanted to punish us," he remarked, adding that the move has worsened the political and social landscape in the valley.
He further pointed out that the abrogation of Article 370 has led to increased disillusionment among the youth and could fuel greater unrest in the region. Abdullah expressed his belief that this action was politically motivated to weaken the distinct identity and political rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Reflecting on the history of Article 370, Abdullah reiterated its importance in safeguarding the region's unique position within India. "This was not merely a constitutional provision; it was a pact with the people of Jammu and Kashmir," he argued. By dismantling it, the government has, according to Abdullah, dismantled the trust Kashmiris had in the Indian state.
As the region grapples with its new political reality, Abdullah called for a united political front in Jammu and Kashmir to demand the restoration of Article 370. He also voiced concerns about the ongoing demographic changes in the region, claiming that these changes are aimed at altering the political balance.
Farooq Abdullah’s remarks highlight the continuing controversy and debates surrounding the abrogation of Article 370. His strong criticism reflects the ongoing struggle of the Kashmiri leadership to maintain a distinct identity while seeking a political resolution for the region's challenges.
