Several parts of Jammu & Kashmir witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, leading to widespread disruption in daily life and raising safety concerns. The districts of Poonch and Ramban were among the worst affected, with authorities issuing alerts and taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

In Poonch, torrential rain caused water levels in local streams and rivers to rise significantly. The district administration, along with local police, issued an alert for residents in low-lying areas, urging them to move to safer locations. Continuous rainfall also raised concerns of flash floods and potential landslides in vulnerable areas.

Police teams were deployed in flood-prone villages to assist with evacuations and to monitor water levels. Public announcements were made through loudspeakers to warn residents against venturing near swollen water bodies. “We are keeping a close watch on the situation. People living near rivers and nullahs should stay alert and follow safety advisories,” said a senior police officer from Poonch.

Simultaneously, in Ramban district, relentless rain caused multiple landslides along the crucial National Highway-44 (NH-44), which connects Jammu with Srinagar. As a result, the highway has been temporarily closed for traffic, stranding hundreds of vehicles. This has affected both passenger travel and the movement of essential goods between the two regions.

District officials and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working to clear the debris and restore vehicular movement. However, heavy and continuous rain is hampering efforts. According to local reports, some stranded passengers were provided food and temporary shelter by the administration.

Commuters have been advised to postpone non-essential travel and to stay updated through official traffic advisories. “The highway will be reopened once weather conditions improve and it is deemed safe for vehicles,” a traffic department spokesperson confirmed.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted continued rainfall in several parts of Jammu & Kashmir over the next 24–48 hours. A yellow weather alert remains in effect for many hilly regions, and the administration is on high alert for possible landslides, flash floods, and road blockages.

Local schools in some affected areas remained closed as a precautionary measure, and emergency services are on standby across the state.

Residents are urged to remain indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid riverbanks and hill slopes, and follow updates from local authorities.

The situation remains under close watch, and more updates are expected as the weather evolves.
