Several regions across Jammu and Kashmir witnessed heavy rainfall on Friday, leading to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and disruption of daily life. The downpour started early in the day and intensified by afternoon, affecting both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions of the Union Territory.
In Srinagar, the commercial hub of Lal Chowk was severely affected. Visuals from the area showed flooded roads and vehicles moving slowly through water-logged streets. The areas around the famous Dal Lake also witnessed high water accumulation, causing difficulties for both tourists and local residents. Shops and local businesses in some areas of the city remained shut due to the inclement weather.
Jammu city too was hit by heavy showers. Major roadways reported traffic congestion, with visibility reduced significantly due to the rain. Commuters were forced to move slowly, and public transport services faced delays. In several low-lying areas, drains overflowed, resulting in temporary flooding.
According to the Meteorological Department, the rainfall is part of a western disturbance currently active over the northern region of India. Officials have issued an advisory warning of more rain over the next 24 to 48 hours in parts of Jammu, Udhampur, and the Kashmir Valley. The department also cautioned about the possibility of flash floods and landslides in hilly areas.
Local administration in both Jammu and Srinagar has stepped up efforts to deal with the situation. Municipal workers were deployed to clear blocked drains and manage the water flow in congested areas. The Disaster Management Authority is on alert, with emergency teams stationed at vulnerable locations.
Residents, especially those living in low-lying and flood-prone areas, have been urged to remain indoors unless necessary. Authorities have also asked the public to stay updated with official weather bulletins and avoid venturing near water bodies, particularly in tourist hotspots.
Tourist movement around Dal Lake, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg has been restricted temporarily. Several scheduled outdoor tourist activities were canceled due to safety concerns.
The sudden spell of heavy rain has raised concerns among farmers as well. With crops at a crucial stage, prolonged rainfall could affect agricultural output in some areas. However, officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide assistance if required.
The current weather situation highlights the need for better urban drainage systems and emergency preparedness in the region. While rains bring much-needed relief from the summer heat, such intense downpours often expose the weaknesses in civic infrastructure.
Further updates from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will determine how long the current weather system is likely to persist. Meanwhile, the administration continues to work towards ensuring minimal disruption and safety for all residents and visitors in Jammu and Kashmir.
