Security forces continued their counterterrorism operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district on Thursday as a fresh encounter broke out on the fifth day of Operation Trashi I. Officials confirmed that the exchange of fire took place in the higher reaches of the Chatroo area, where terrorists are believed to be holed up in dense forests.
Operation Trashi I was launched on Sunday in Sonnar village near Mandral Singhpora in the Chatroo belt following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. The region is known for its thick forests and rugged terrain, making search operations challenging for security forces.
According to officials, during the initial phase of the operation, a search team of the Army and other security forces encountered terrorists around noon in the Sonnar area, located northeast of Chatroo. In the exchange of fire, three soldiers sustained injuries. They were immediately evacuated and provided medical treatment.
On Thursday, fresh firing was reported when one of the search teams came in contact with two to three foreign terrorists believed to be affiliated with Pakistan based Jaish e Mohammad. Officials said the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire and also lobbed grenades in an attempt to break the security cordon. Security forces responded effectively, leading to a brief but intense gunfight.
Senior officials said the terrorists are using the forest cover to evade capture. Additional troops have been deployed to strengthen the cordon and prevent the terrorists from escaping. Surveillance has been intensified using drones and other technical equipment to track movement in the area.
The operation has been proceeding cautiously due to the difficult terrain, dense vegetation, and the possibility of improvised explosive devices. Security forces are conducting systematic searches to ensure the safety of personnel while maintaining pressure on the terrorists.
Officials said operations in such remote forested areas often take time, as forces aim to avoid civilian casualties and ensure complete sanitisation of the region. Residents in nearby villages have been advised to remain indoors and cooperate with security agencies during the ongoing operation.
The Kishtwar district has witnessed several counterterrorism operations in the past due to its strategic location and forest cover, which has been exploited by terrorist groups attempting to move between regions. Security agencies remain on high alert across the district and adjoining areas.
Authorities reiterated their commitment to neutralising terrorist threats and maintaining peace in the region. The situation remains under close monitoring, and further details are expected once the operation progresses.
