Hospitals have reported an increase in cases of respiratory issues, seasonal flu, and joint pain during the ongoing cold wave.

The Kashmir Valley continues to experience an intense cold wave as temperatures plunged across the region, with Srinagar recording a minimum temperature of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius. The sharp drop in mercury has intensified winter conditions, affecting daily life and infrastructure in several districts.

According to the Meteorological Department, the cold wave is the result of prolonged clear skies and the absence of fresh snowfall, leading to significant heat loss during night hours. Several areas of the valley, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Kupwara, recorded sub zero temperatures, with residents waking up to frost covered rooftops, roads, and open fields.

In Srinagar, the freezing conditions led to partial freezing of water supply lines, causing inconvenience to households in many localities. People were seen using electric heaters, gas heaters, and traditional heating methods to cope with the biting cold. Early morning movement remained limited as residents avoided stepping out unless necessary.

The extreme cold has also impacted transportation in some parts of the valley. Slippery roads and reduced visibility during morning hours prompted authorities to issue travel advisories. Schools in certain areas reported lower attendance as parents preferred to keep children indoors due to harsh weather conditions.

Health officials have advised people, especially the elderly and children, to take precautionary measures to avoid cold related illnesses. Hospitals have reported an increase in cases of respiratory issues, seasonal flu, and joint pain during the ongoing cold wave.

Farmers expressed concern over frost damage to crops and orchards, particularly vegetable farms and young fruit plants. However, experts noted that sustained cold temperatures are beneficial for apple orchards, as chilling hours play an important role in fruit production.

The Meteorological Department has predicted that the cold wave conditions are likely to continue over the next few days. While there is a possibility of light snowfall or rain in isolated areas, no major weather disturbance is expected in the immediate future. Night temperatures are expected to remain below freezing in most parts of the valley.

The administration has instructed concerned departments to remain alert and ensure uninterrupted supply of essential services such as electricity, water, and healthcare. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby to deal with any weather related issues.

The ongoing cold wave once again highlights the severity of winter in the Kashmir Valley. Residents have been urged to follow official advisories, limit exposure to extreme cold, and assist vulnerable individuals during this period of harsh weather conditions.

However, experts noted that sustained cold temperatures are beneficial for apple orchards, as chilling hours play an important role in fruit production.
