In a major breakthrough for counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces uncovered a terrorist hideout in the Baramulla district and recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition. The operation was jointly carried out by the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police following credible intelligence inputs about the presence of hidden weapons in the area.
The hideout was located in a forested area of Baramulla, which has previously witnessed sporadic militant activity. Acting swiftly on the information, a search operation was launched early in the morning. During the combing of the area, security personnel discovered a well-concealed hideout containing assault rifles, magazines, grenades, and other war-like stores.
Officials stated that the recovery included AK-47 rifles, a significant number of live rounds, hand grenades, and communication equipment. These items were hidden in waterproof containers and buried to avoid detection. Preliminary assessments suggest the cache was being stored for use in future terror activities in the region or for supply to active militants operating in north Kashmir.
A senior police official said the successful recovery has dealt a blow to terror infrastructure and indicates the presence of sleeper cells or facilitators operating in the region. He added that investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals responsible for maintaining the hideout and to trace the source of the arms supply. Surveillance and tracking operations have been intensified in nearby areas to prevent further militant regrouping.
This operation is part of the larger, intensified counter-insurgency campaign being carried out in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have increased their vigil in recent months in response to attempts by terrorist groups to revive their networks, particularly in northern districts like Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora. The region has seen a spurt in infiltration attempts, many of which have been foiled at the Line of Control.
Authorities believe the latest seizure points to continued efforts by terror outfits to smuggle arms into the valley, despite tight security measures. Intelligence agencies have also flagged the use of local youth for logistical support and storage of weapons. Efforts are being made to engage with local communities and gather more actionable intelligence to counter such threats.
The Army spokesperson praised the seamless coordination between security agencies and reiterated the commitment to ensuring peace and security in the Union Territory. He noted that such operations are crucial in preventing future terror attacks and weakening the operational capabilities of militant groups.
Local residents in the area where the hideout was found expressed relief and appreciated the efforts of the security forces in keeping the region safe. However, officials urge continued public cooperation to report any suspicious activity.
This latest operation underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining internal security and the determination of security forces to counter any threat to peace and stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
