The global art world has turned its focus to Doha as Art Basel makes its first-ever appearance in the Middle East with the launch of Art Basel Qatar. Considered one of the most influential platforms for contemporary art worldwide, Art Basel’s expansion into Qatar marks a significant milestone for the region’s cultural landscape.

Art Basel Qatar is the event’s fifth international edition, following established fairs in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong and Paris. The Doha edition brings together artists, galleries and curators from around the world, presenting works that span multiple mediums, styles and cultural narratives. This year’s edition is curated by internationally acclaimed Egyptian-born artist Wael Shawky, who has framed the exhibition around the theme Becoming.

According to Shawky, the theme reflects a moment of global transition and transformation. He explained that the concept is not merely about offering an alternative space for art, but about creating a new language that responds to changing global realities. The theme also acknowledges the Gulf region’s emergence as a significant centre for artistic and cultural expression.

In a departure from Art Basel’s traditional booth-based format, the Qatar edition adopts a more immersive and experimental approach. The exhibition design aims to create deeper engagement between audiences and artworks, allowing visitors to experience art in a more fluid and interconnected setting.

A key focus of Art Basel Qatar is the promotion of local and regional talent. More than half of the participating artists are from the Middle East and North Africa region. Organisers noted that many talented artists in the region do not yet have gallery representation, making this platform an important first step in bringing their work to international attention.

Under the leadership of Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, the event has extended beyond exhibition spaces to transform parts of Doha itself. Several installations draw inspiration from the city’s skyline, architecture and urban colours, reinforcing the connection between art and place.

Art Basel is known for maintaining a balance between global relevance and local identity, and the Doha edition reflects this philosophy. The city’s rapid development and growing cultural ambitions are evident throughout the programme, which pushes creative boundaries while remaining rooted in regional context.

Sixteen artists are making their Art Basel debut this year, highlighting the fair’s role in introducing emerging voices to the international art scene. Among them is Qatari contemporary artist Butheina Al Muftah, whose work explores themes of identity, collective memory and society. Her latest project takes the form of a conceptual film-based work designed to encourage dialogue and reflection.

Art Basel Qatar is open to the public and aims to invite global audiences to engage with Doha and the broader Gulf region through art. The organisers hope the event will strengthen cultural exchange and position the Middle East as an integral part of the global contemporary art ecosystem.

Art Basel Qatar is the event’s fifth international edition, following established fairs in Basel, Miami Beach, Hong Kong and Paris.
