The reshuffle also includes the appointment of Major General Kaiser Rashid Chowdhury as Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, the country’s premier military intelligence agency.

Bangladesh has announced a major reshuffle in its Army leadership shortly after the formation of the new government headed by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The reorganisation affects several senior command positions and key roles within the country’s military intelligence structure, marking one of the most significant changes in the armed forces in recent years.

The political backdrop to the development is the recent general election held on February 12, in which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party secured a two thirds majority. Rahman, 60, took oath as Prime Minister on February 17, formally concluding the 18 month interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

According to reports published by Prothom Alo, the Army Headquarters issued formal notifications announcing the leadership changes. Lieutenant General M Mainur Rahman has been appointed as the new Chief of General Staff. Prior to this role, he served as the General Officer Commanding of the Army Training and Doctrine Command.

In another significant change, Lieutenant General S M Kamrul Hasan has been replaced as Principal Staff Officer by newly promoted Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman. Hasan has reportedly been attached to the foreign ministry and is expected to be appointed as an ambassador abroad.

The reshuffle also includes the appointment of Major General Kaiser Rashid Chowdhury as Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence, the country’s premier military intelligence agency. Currently serving as a brigadier general at Army Headquarters, he will assume the position upon his promotion to major general.

Additionally, Brigadier General Md Hafizur Rahman, who was serving as defence adviser at the Bangladesh High Commission in India, has been recalled. He is set to take charge as General Officer Commanding of an infantry division with the rank of major general.

The reorganisation comes at a time of political transition and heightened public attention. Bangladesh has experienced episodes of unrest in recent months following the change in government. The interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus came to power after a student led protest movement resulted in the fall of the government headed by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Hasina has since been residing at an undisclosed location in India.

Observers note that leadership changes within the armed forces are often undertaken during periods of political change to align strategic and administrative priorities. The Bangladesh Army has not publicly elaborated on the reasons behind the reshuffle, stating only that the changes were issued through official channels.

Further developments are expected as the new appointments take effect and the government outlines its policy direction in the coming weeks.
