India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused Naik and his associates of diverting large sums of money through his NGO and foreign channels.

Dhaka, Bangladesh / New Delhi, India:

Bangladesh has reportedly permitted Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, wanted by Indian authorities for alleged money laundering and terror financing activities, to reside in the country. Zakir Naik, founder of the Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), has been a controversial figure in India and abroad, facing multiple investigations into his financial dealings and speeches that were linked to radicalization.

India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) has accused Naik and his associates of diverting large sums of money through his NGO and foreign channels. He has been charged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and other provisions. Indian authorities have repeatedly sought his extradition from countries he has sought refuge in, including Malaysia and now Bangladesh, citing ongoing investigations and pending court proceedings.

Bangladesh’s decision to host Naik has sparked diplomatic discussions, as India has formally requested cooperation to bring him to justice. Analysts say the situation highlights the challenges of cross-border legal enforcement and the limitations of extradition treaties when political or administrative discretion is exercised by host countries.

Naik first left India in 2016 after facing mounting scrutiny from law enforcement agencies. Since then, he has moved between several countries to avoid arrest. His entry into Bangladesh comes at a time when India is intensifying investigations into individuals and organizations accused of financing extremist activities, while also seeking international collaboration to curb money laundering and terror financing networks.

Human rights observers note that while countries may allow residency for individuals, international law emphasizes the need for legal processes to address criminal allegations, especially when formal extradition requests are made. The Zakir Naik case has repeatedly tested the effectiveness of bilateral agreements between India and other countries regarding extradition and enforcement of financial crime laws.

Political analysts also observe that hosting controversial figures like Naik can have diplomatic repercussions. India has emphasized that Naik’s activities not only involve financial crimes but also have implications for national security and public safety. The ongoing legal process and media coverage have further intensified scrutiny on host countries’ policies.

Naik’s presence in Bangladesh is expected to be closely monitored by Indian authorities, and diplomatic channels are likely to remain active to resolve the issue. Legal experts suggest that India may seek additional measures, including formal extradition requests, monitoring of financial transactions, and leveraging international legal cooperation frameworks to bring him back under Indian jurisdiction.

The case has become a focal point for discussions on the global movement of controversial figures, legal accountability, and the role of host nations in managing cross-border criminal allegations. Observers say that it underscores the need for stronger international collaboration in combating money laundering, financing of extremism, and ensuring that justice is not hindered by national boundaries.
