China Criticises US Over Detention and Repatriation of Chinese Nationals at Ports of Entry

The US government has not issued a detailed public response to China’s specific claims but has consistently maintained that its border and immigration policies are applied in accordance with domestic laws and security considerations.

China has strongly criticised the United States over the alleged detention and forced repatriation of several Chinese nationals by US immigration authorities, calling the actions groundless and excessively harsh. The issue has added to ongoing tensions between the two countries, which have faced disagreements across trade, technology, and security matters in recent years.

According to statements issued by Chinese officials, multiple Chinese citizens, including executives from Chinese companies, were subjected to extended interrogation upon arrival in the United States. These individuals reportedly faced long hours of questioning, temporary detention, and were eventually sent back to China without being provided clear reasons for the actions taken against them.

The Chinese government described the treatment as inconsistent with established international practices and said it had lodged formal representations with US authorities. Beijing maintained that the affected individuals were travelling for legitimate purposes, including business-related engagements, and had complied with visa and entry requirements.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson stated that such actions undermine mutual trust and disrupt normal people-to-people and commercial exchanges between the two nations. The spokesperson further urged the United States to respect the lawful rights of foreign nationals and to ensure transparency and fairness in its immigration procedures.

US immigration authorities have broad discretionary powers at ports of entry, including the right to question travellers and deny entry if they believe an individual does not meet entry requirements. However, the Chinese side argued that the lack of clear explanations and the manner in which the individuals were treated raised serious concerns.

The controversy emerges at a time when US China relations remain strained. Both sides have imposed restrictions on travel, technology transfers, and business operations in recent years, often citing national security concerns. Analysts note that immigration-related disputes are increasingly becoming a point of friction as geopolitical competition intensifies.

Experts also point out that business leaders and professionals are among those most affected by tightening border controls globally. Increased scrutiny, particularly involving nationals from countries with tense diplomatic relations, has led to uncertainty for international travel and investment.

China has called on the US to create a more predictable and non-discriminatory environment for foreign visitors. It also urged American authorities to avoid what it described as selective or arbitrary enforcement that could harm bilateral ties.

Observers believe that unless addressed through diplomatic dialogue, such incidents could further complicate efforts to stabilise relations between the world’s two largest economies. For now, the issue highlights the broader challenges facing cross-border movement in an era of heightened geopolitical sensitivity.
