As a solemn gesture of mourning and respect, the national flag was flown at half-mast in Chennai today to honour Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88. The late pontiff was globally admired for his efforts to promote peace, compassion, environmental stewardship, and interfaith dialogue.
The Government of India ordered the national flag to be lowered in several locations, including Tamil Nadu’s capital, Chennai, where a large Christian population resides and where tributes poured in from all sections of society. The gesture reflects India’s recognition of Pope Francis’ global influence and the strong connection many in India felt with his teachings.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, served as the 266th head of the Roman Catholic Church and was the first pope from outside Europe in over 1,300 years. His papacy was marked by a progressive approach to social issues, environmental advocacy through the encyclical Laudato si’, and efforts to bridge gaps between faiths.
Christian communities across India, particularly in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa, and northeastern states, have held special prayer services in memory of the Pope. Churches rang bells in mourning and conducted masses, remembering his deep compassion for the poor, marginalized, and oppressed.
In Chennai, Archdiocese officials conducted a candlelight vigil outside Santhome Cathedral Basilica, attended by hundreds of believers, community leaders, and local politicians. Archbishop George Antonysamy stated, “Pope Francis was not just a leader of Catholics, but a shepherd of humanity. His love for the people, regardless of religion or status, will be remembered forever.”
Political leaders across party lines also extended their condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a message on social media, acknowledging Pope Francis’ enduring legacy of peace and justice, and his efforts toward building a more inclusive world.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that all government buildings in Chennai and other key cities with significant Catholic populations would observe the half-mast protocol. No official state holiday was declared, but government offices participated in a minute of silence to mark the occasion.
As the world mourns the passing of one of the most compassionate voices of our time, India has joined the global community in paying heartfelt tribute. Pope Francis’ influence will continue to guide millions in their pursuit of peace, love, and unity.
