Stability and inclusiveness are essential for continued development and cooperation between our two nations,” an official source in the Ministry of External Affairs said.

New Delhi/Dhaka: India has expressed its concern over reports indicating a possible ban on the Awami League, Bangladesh’s ruling political party. This diplomatic expression of concern was communicated amid increasing political tension in Dhaka, where opposition groups and legal bodies have called for action against the party on various grounds. India has underscored the importance of democratic continuity and political stability in Bangladesh, a close neighbor and strategic partner.

The development comes as Bangladesh prepares for its upcoming general elections, which are expected to take place later this year. The Awami League, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been in power since 2009 and has played a key role in shaping Bangladesh’s current political and economic direction.

In recent weeks, political unrest has grown in Bangladesh, with some groups questioning the legitimacy of the ruling party and demanding legal action against it. These developments have prompted speculation over the possibility of restrictions or a ban on the Awami League, a scenario that has drawn international attention.

India, which shares a deep historical and diplomatic relationship with Bangladesh, responded by conveying its concern through appropriate diplomatic channels. Sources in New Delhi confirmed that Indian officials emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic structures and inclusive political participation in Bangladesh.

“India continues to support democratic values in the region. Stability and inclusiveness are essential for continued development and cooperation between our two nations,” an official source in the Ministry of External Affairs said.

In response to India’s concerns, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying that no decision had been made regarding any action against the Awami League. Dhaka reassured India and the international community that Bangladesh remains committed to democratic governance and constitutional processes.

“We acknowledge the concerns expressed by our neighbor and wish to affirm that democratic institutions in Bangladesh remain functional and respected. The political future of the country will be determined through fair and transparent electoral processes,” the official statement read.

Political analysts say India’s involvement reflects its strategic interest in ensuring a stable and friendly government in Dhaka. Over the past decade, India and Bangladesh have enhanced cooperation on several fronts, including security, trade, water sharing, and connectivity.

Any political instability in Bangladesh, analysts argue, could impact regional security, particularly in India’s northeastern states that share a border with the country. The Awami League government has also played a key role in countering extremist elements and fostering regional cooperation, which India views as critical.

Opposition leaders in Bangladesh, however, have dismissed India’s concerns as interference in domestic affairs, while ruling party leaders welcomed the expression of support for democratic norms.

As Bangladesh moves closer to elections, international observers are likely to monitor the situation closely. India’s engagement is expected to continue in line with its broader neighborhood-first policy, with a focus on maintaining peace and democratic order in the region.

In response to India’s concerns, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement clarifying that no decision had been made regarding any action against the Awami League.
