The two countries concluded the visit with the signing of multiple memoranda of understanding, aimed at expanding cooperation in areas ranging from defense to digital technology and education.

During his official visit to India, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr made a significant statement on regional geopolitics by calling the Indo-Pacific the correct and natural evolution of what was traditionally referred to as the Asia-Pacific. Speaking at a public event attended by diplomats, policymakers, and scholars, President Marcos Jr underscored the importance of adopting terminology that reflects the strategic realities of the modern world.

According to President Marcos Jr, the Indo-Pacific construct includes a broader and more interconnected vision of the region. It not only spans the traditional economic hubs of East and Southeast Asia but also encompasses the Indian Ocean and its littoral states. This, he said, aligns more accurately with the present economic and security interdependencies of the 21st century.

President Marcos Jr noted that the evolution of the term signifies a shift in the global understanding of regional partnerships. He emphasized that countries like India, with their strong economic presence and growing strategic influence, are vital to the region’s peace and prosperity. He also underlined the role of ASEAN countries and their active engagement in shaping the Indo-Pacific narrative.

The Philippines leader’s remarks came during a panel discussion focused on maritime cooperation and regional stability. He reaffirmed his country’s commitment to safeguarding open sea lanes, upholding international law including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and resisting any form of unilateral aggression in contested waters. Without naming any specific nation, his comments were seen as a veiled reference to rising maritime tensions in the South China Sea.

India and the Philippines have been steadily strengthening bilateral ties, particularly in areas of defense cooperation, maritime security, and trade. President Marcos Jr praised India’s Act East Policy and called for enhanced collaboration between the two democracies. He expressed optimism about joint initiatives in naval exercises, technology sharing, and disaster response mechanisms.

In his address, he also called for collective action among like-minded countries to uphold a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. He stressed that regional cooperation should be based on mutual respect, adherence to international norms, and peaceful resolution of disputes.

Indian officials welcomed the remarks by the Philippines President, stating that his vision for the Indo-Pacific closely aligns with India’s own strategic outlook. Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation in sectors such as maritime domain awareness, infrastructure development, and capacity building in smaller island nations.

The visit by President Marcos Jr comes amid shifting geopolitical dynamics in Asia, where regional alliances and partnerships are being recalibrated in response to evolving security challenges. His endorsement of the Indo-Pacific as a strategic framework marks a continuation of growing consensus among regional powers about the need for inclusive and rules-based engagement.
