Israel has increased security preparations ahead of the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, with authorities warning of a heightened risk of attacks against Israelis and Jewish communities.
The Israeli National Security Council issued a warning ahead of the anniversary, saying terrorist organisations linked to Iran, Hamas and other extremist groups could regard October 7 as an important date for potential attacks. Israeli authorities have advised citizens and travellers to exercise greater caution, particularly in crowded areas and around demonstrations.
The security alert comes three years after the Hamas led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. The assault resulted in about 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 people, according to figures cited by Reuters and other international news agencies. The attack triggered a large scale Israeli military campaign in Gaza and led to a wider regional conflict involving several armed groups.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has also said that the military was placed on high alert ahead of the anniversary. Israeli officials have expressed concern about the possibility of Hamas attempting attacks during the sensitive period. Authorities have said security measures are being strengthened to protect Israeli communities and military personnel.
The anniversary is being observed across Israel with memorial events for people killed in the 2023 attack. One of the major commemorations is taking place near the site of the Nova music festival, where hundreds of people were killed during the assault. A separate gathering is also being held at Hostage Square in Tel Aviv. The anniversary has significant emotional importance for Israeli society, particularly families who lost relatives or whose loved ones were taken hostage.
The security situation remains closely connected to the continuing conflict in Gaza. Although a ceasefire agreement brokered in 2025 halted much of the major fighting, Reuters reported that Israeli military operations have continued and negotiations over Hamas disarmament and Israeli troop withdrawals remain unresolved. The situation has kept Gaza and regional security at the centre of Israel’s national debate.
Security concerns are also gaining political importance because Israel is preparing for its first national election since the October 7 attack. The election is scheduled for October 27, and security issues are expected to remain a major part of the campaign.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and opposition parties have placed the events of October 7 at the centre of their political arguments. Opposition figures have criticised the government over the security failures that preceded the attack, while Netanyahu and his supporters have defended the government’s handling of the conflict and argued that Israel has become stronger through the subsequent military response.
According to the Associated Press, the October 7 attack has become a major framework for Israel’s political debate. Security, responsibility for the 2023 failures, military policy and national defence are expected to remain important issues for voters as the election approaches.
The Israeli National Security Council has also urged Israelis travelling abroad to exercise caution. Its warning specifically highlighted countries and locations where Israeli citizens could face increased risks. Citizens have been advised to avoid demonstrations and crowded situations and to be cautious about publicly identifying themselves as Israeli security personnel or military members.
Israeli security chiefs have meanwhile held assessments involving the military, police and Shin Bet security service. Officials said the discussions covered current intelligence, border security, the home front and measures to counter terrorism. Security preparations are also being linked to ensuring that the upcoming election can take place safely and without major disruptions.
The October 7 anniversary therefore comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Israel. The country is simultaneously remembering the victims of the 2023 attack, dealing with continuing regional security challenges and preparing for a major national election.
While Israeli authorities have warned about possible threats from Iran, Hamas and other groups, these warnings represent official security assessments and do not mean that a specific attack has been confirmed. Authorities are increasing preparedness as a precaution during a highly sensitive period.
The anniversary is expected to remain a significant moment in Israel’s public and political life, with security, national responsibility, the Gaza conflict and the upcoming election likely to dominate public discussion in the weeks ahead.
