Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu Responds to Reports of Rift with Donald Trump

“Israel’s interests come first, and that is how I’ve always conducted foreign policy.” Reports of a potential rift between the two surfaced following Trump’s public criticisms over certain Israeli decisions, including Netanyahu’s quick recognition of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 US Presidential elections.

Jerusalem:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has clarified his position on the reported tensions with former US President Donald Trump, saying that while disagreements may exist, the relationship is grounded in longstanding mutual respect and shared interests between the two countries.

Speaking to Israeli media during a recent press briefing, Netanyahu addressed widespread speculation suggesting a personal fallout with Trump, a leader he had previously described as one of Israel’s closest allies during his term in the White House. “I don’t get into personal quarrels,” Netanyahu said. “Israel’s interests come first, and that is how I’ve always conducted foreign policy.”

Reports of a potential rift between the two surfaced following Trump’s public criticisms over certain Israeli decisions, including Netanyahu’s quick recognition of Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 US Presidential elections. Trump, in past interviews, expressed disappointment, claiming Netanyahu showed disloyalty by being among the first world leaders to congratulate Biden.

Despite these statements, Netanyahu sought to downplay the friction. “I will always appreciate the contributions made by former President Trump to the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said, citing the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and its recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. “We worked together on many historic achievements. That doesn’t mean we will agree on everything.”

Trump’s criticisms have also resurfaced amid political shifts in the Middle East, and his comments have been closely followed in Israeli political circles. However, Netanyahu reiterated that while personalities and administrations change, the US-Israel alliance remains fundamentally strong. He added that leadership requires making difficult decisions, sometimes at the cost of personal alliances, in order to protect national interest.

Analysts say Netanyahu’s measured response reflects his intent to maintain good relations with both major US political parties, regardless of internal party dynamics. As Israel continues to navigate complex regional challenges, including tensions with Iran and shifting diplomatic ties with Arab states, Netanyahu is keen to project stability and continuity in Israel’s foreign policy.

Domestic political observers in Israel also suggest that Netanyahu, facing challenges within his own coalition and scrutiny over judicial reforms, is focusing more on consolidating internal unity rather than engaging in international controversies. “This is a time for strong leadership, and I am focused on what’s best for our country,” Netanyahu said during the briefing.

The Prime Minister also emphasized that his government remains in regular contact with the current US administration on key issues, including defense cooperation, counterterrorism, and economic partnerships. He assured that regardless of political transitions in the US, Israel’s strategic relationship with Washington will remain a cornerstone of its international diplomacy.

As speculation continues in the media about the evolving dynamic between Trump and Netanyahu, both leaders appear to be navigating the issue carefully. While past cooperation is acknowledged, both are moving forward in different political landscapes that require independent decision-making.
