India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has underlined the “high degree of urgency” surrounding India’s ongoing trade negotiations with major global partners, particularly the United States and the European Union. His remarks come amid a renewed diplomatic and economic push to strengthen India's position in the global trade framework.
Speaking at a business and policy summit, Jaishankar noted that India is determined to move forward with strategic trade agreements that are beneficial to both sides. “There is a high degree of urgency in these negotiations. We are working to bridge gaps, address concerns, and arrive at frameworks that support mutual growth,” he said.
The India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which has been under discussion for over a decade, has seen renewed momentum over the last year. Similarly, trade ties with the United States are being restructured to reflect the evolving nature of global supply chains, technological exchange, and investment flows.
Jaishankar emphasized that India’s approach is pragmatic yet ambitious, seeking to ensure that trade deals protect domestic interests while opening up new markets for Indian goods and services. “India is not negotiating from a position of compromise, but from confidence,” he said.
He further pointed out that global uncertainties, supply chain shifts, and geopolitical realignments have created new opportunities for India to emerge as a trusted trade partner. The minister also mentioned that climate, digital trade, and critical technologies are now key pillars in trade discussions, alongside traditional sectors like manufacturing, textiles, and agriculture.
With the European Union, discussions are also focused on sustainability, labor standards, and green trade policies, which Jaishankar said must be fair and non-discriminatory.
On the US front, India is seeking greater access to American markets for its pharmaceutical, IT, and agricultural products. In return, the US is expected to push for stronger protections in areas such as intellectual property, digital trade, and regulatory standards.
Industry experts have welcomed Jaishankar’s statements, viewing them as a sign of serious intent and positive direction. Analysts believe that successful trade agreements with the US and EU would mark a significant step for India’s ambitions to become a $5 trillion economy and a major player in global trade.
As negotiations continue, both sides are expected to meet in the coming weeks for further rounds of talks. The outcomes could shape India’s economic landscape for years to come.
