In the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has offered support for a "neutral and independent" investigation into the incident. Addressing the media in Islamabad, Sharif denied any Pakistani role in the attack and said his government is committed to cooperating with international bodies to ensure a transparent probe.

“The people of Pakistan stand against terrorism in all forms. We are willing to support a neutral investigation under international supervision if it helps reveal the truth,” Sharif stated. He added that Pakistan itself has been a victim of terrorism for decades and understands the pain caused by such acts.

The Pahalgam attack, which targeted security forces and led to several casualties, has once again heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. Indian authorities have maintained that terrorist organizations operating from Pakistani soil were responsible for the attack. Pakistan’s offer for a neutral investigation is being seen as an attempt to deflect growing international scrutiny and pressure.

Despite the offer, India's response has so far remained cautious. Indian security agencies have been conducting their own investigation and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Officials in New Delhi reiterated that the evidence points to cross-border terrorism networks with links to Pakistan-based groups, a claim that Islamabad has routinely denied.

This latest development adds another layer to the already complex relationship between the two neighbors. Since the Pulwama attack in 2019, diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan have been severely strained. While there have been occasional diplomatic overtures, fundamental issues, including terrorism and border security, continue to prevent any meaningful dialogue.

International reactions to Pakistan’s proposal for a neutral probe have been mixed. While some global observers have called for de-escalation and dialogue, others insist that accountability and credible actions against terror networks must precede any talks.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that peace and stability in South Asia are crucial for economic growth and prosperity. “We want good relations with all our neighbors, but peace cannot be one-sided. Dialogue must be based on trust and mutual respect,” he said.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened across Jammu and Kashmir, and Indian forces have intensified their operations to dismantle terror networks operating within the region. The government has also called for international support to isolate states that sponsor terrorism.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen whether Pakistan’s call for a neutral investigation will pave the way for international involvement or further deepen the divide between the two nations.
