The government has strengthened early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms, but experts say public awareness and community-level preparedness remain key factors in minimizing damage.

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck Papua in Indonesia, late on Thursday, triggering panic among residents and prompting swift emergency response operations. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake was recorded at a depth of approximately 30 kilometers below the surface, with its epicenter located off the northern coast of Papua.

Residents reported intense shaking lasting several seconds, which sent people rushing out of homes and buildings. Emergency services immediately began assessing the impact, while local authorities issued advisories urging people to remain cautious about possible aftershocks.

So far, there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities or major injuries, but several structures are believed to have sustained minor to moderate damage. Roads, bridges, and public infrastructure in nearby areas are being inspected for cracks or instability. Local hospitals and emergency shelters are on standby to receive anyone in need of assistance.

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) confirmed that a tsunami warning was not issued, as the quake’s epicenter and depth did not indicate an imminent threat of large sea waves. However, residents living in coastal regions have been advised to stay alert.

Earthquakes are common in Indonesia due to its location on the seismically active “Ring of Fire,” a major area in the Pacific Ocean basin where multiple tectonic plates meet. This region experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity, making preparedness a critical part of life for local communities.

In recent years, Indonesia has experienced several destructive earthquakes, some of which have led to tsunamis and significant casualties. The government has strengthened early warning systems and emergency response mechanisms, but experts say public awareness and community-level preparedness remain key factors in minimizing damage.

Authorities in Papua have set up command centers to coordinate rescue and relief operations. Teams are being deployed to survey remote areas, which may not have immediate communication with urban centers. Mobile communication networks experienced brief disruptions after the quake but have since started to stabilize.

International monitoring agencies, including USGS and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), are closely tracking aftershocks and have urged caution over the next 24 hours. Seismologists note that aftershocks following a major earthquake can be dangerous and cause additional structural damage.

Local media footage showed residents gathering in open fields, avoiding buildings for safety. Some schools and businesses are expected to remain closed temporarily as inspections continue.

The Indonesian government has assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of people in the affected regions. Emergency hotlines have been activated, and disaster management units are working around the clock.
