Russian authorities have accused Ukraine and Poland of being involved in an alleged assassination attempt targeting Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, a senior figure in Russia’s military intelligence establishment. The Federal Security Service of Russia stated that Ukraine’s Security Service was responsible for planning the attack, while Polish intelligence agencies allegedly played a role in facilitating the operation.
According to Russian officials, the suspected shooter has been identified as a Ukrainian-born Russian citizen. Authorities said he was detained abroad and later extradited to Russia from Dubai, where he was questioned as part of the investigation. The FSB also confirmed that another individual has been identified as a suspected accomplice and is currently under interrogation.
The Russian government claims that the accused individuals were recruited through foreign intelligence channels and were tasked with carrying out the assassination attempt on Russian soil. Officials said the operation was disrupted before it could be completed, preventing any harm to Lieutenant General Alexeyev.
Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev is regarded as a high-ranking military officer with extensive experience in intelligence and operational planning. Russian media reports have described him as a key figure within the country’s security framework, making him a high-value target in the context of ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine.
The allegations have added a new layer of tension to an already strained geopolitical situation. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Moscow has repeatedly accused Kyiv and its Western allies of covert operations, sabotage, and targeted attacks within Russian territory. Ukraine has consistently denied involvement in such incidents, while Poland has rejected similar accusations in the past.
At the time of the announcement, neither Ukraine nor Poland had issued an official response to the claims. Western governments have often characterised Russian accusations of foreign intelligence involvement as unsubstantiated, while Russia maintains that it possesses evidence to support its assertions.
Security analysts note that claims of assassination plots and intelligence operations have become more frequent amid the prolonged conflict, reflecting the expanding scope of confrontation beyond the battlefield. Intelligence activity, cyber operations, and covert actions are increasingly seen as part of modern warfare strategies.
The Russian authorities stated that investigations are ongoing and that additional details may be released as questioning continues. They also reiterated their position that foreign intelligence agencies are actively working to destabilise Russia through covert actions and targeted attacks.
This incident comes at a time when diplomatic relations between Russia and several European nations remain tense. Accusations involving intelligence agencies further complicate efforts at dialogue and de-escalation, as mutual distrust continues to shape international responses to the conflict.
As the situation develops, the international community is expected to closely monitor official statements and any evidence presented by Russian authorities. The outcome of the investigation may have implications for diplomatic ties, security cooperation, and broader regional stability.
