If Prime Minister Modi accepts the invitation, it would be his first visit to Moscow since the Ukraine conflict began in 2022.

In a move that highlights the enduring diplomatic relationship between India and Russia, the Kremlin has extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Victory Day celebrations scheduled for May 9 in Moscow. The event marks the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and is one of Russia's most significant national holidays.

The invitation was extended through official diplomatic channels and comes at a time when Russia is seeking to strengthen ties with its key global partners amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Victory Day is typically observed with a large military parade in Moscow's Red Square, showcasing Russia’s military prowess and commemorating the sacrifices of Soviet soldiers during World War II.

India and Russia have historically shared close strategic ties, spanning defence cooperation, energy partnerships, space collaboration, and trade. Over the years, both nations have maintained a steady diplomatic engagement, despite shifts in global alliances. If Prime Minister Modi accepts the invitation, it would be his first visit to Moscow since the Ukraine conflict began in 2022.

While the Indian government has not yet confirmed PM Modi’s attendance, diplomatic sources suggest that discussions are underway. A visit by the Indian Prime Minister would be seen as a strong gesture of India’s commitment to maintaining balanced foreign relations, particularly as India continues to engage with both Western nations and Russia on various fronts.

India has taken a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, consistently calling for dialogue and peaceful resolution, while continuing its strategic economic and defence ties with Russia. This potential visit could offer a platform for both leaders to discuss critical bilateral and international issues.

The Victory Day celebrations are expected to be attended by foreign dignitaries, military officials, and diplomats from several countries. PM Modi’s presence would not only reinforce India-Russia relations but also signal India's continued emphasis on multi-alignment in foreign policy.
