In what has been described as the largest aerial assault of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict to date, Russian forces unleashed a coordinated strike involving 367 drones and missiles against Ukraine overnight. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the weapons targeted 30 cities and villages across 12 regions, including the capital, Kyiv, and major eastern hubs such as Kharkiv and Dnipro
Local officials in Zhytomyr Oblast confirmed that 13 civilians lost their lives in the onslaught, among them three children, and dozens were injured when residential buildings, schools, and medical facilities were hit. Emergency services reported fires raging in at least five urban districts, complicating rescue and relief efforts amid continuing air-raid alerts
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the barrage as “barbaric,” urging Western partners to impose stronger sanctions on Moscow. In a televised address, Zelensky warned that “silence only emboldens aggressors,” calling on NATO and EU members to cut off Russia’s energy revenues and freeze assets linked to its defence sector . His appeal follows a recent prisoner exchange in Istanbul, where 1,000 POWs were swapped, a move he said had failed to slow Russian hostilities.
Amid global outrage, former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin as “crazy” and stated he was “not happy with what Putin is doing” Trump warned that any attempt by Russia to overrun Ukraine could precipitate “Russia’s downfall,” but stopped short of endorsing further sanctions, prompting questions about the former president’s influence on current U.S. foreign policy and the broader transatlantic response.
Military analysts note that this strike leverages Russia’s expanding drone fleet, including loitering munitions capable of evading air defences through sheer numbers. The assault’s scale reflects Moscow’s growing emphasis on unmanned systems to offset Ukraine’s improved anti-air capabilities and Western-supplied air-defence batteries
On the ground, Ukrainian defence brigades reported successful interceptions of nearly 40% of incoming threats, though the volume overwhelmed some sectors. In border areas near Sumy and Kherson, residents were evacuated as precautionary measures after repeated missile salvos damaged critical infrastructure, including power substations and water treatment plants
Internationally, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg reiterated the alliance’s support for Ukraine, announcing additional air-defence systems and training for Ukrainian forces. The EU’s foreign policy chief called an emergency meeting to explore sanctions targeting Russia’s drone-production networks and financiers
Despite these measures, Ukraine’s leadership warns that without a united and robust stance, Russia may escalate further. Zelensky underscored the need for long-term security guarantees and accelerated delivery of air-defence batteries, while diplomatic channels remain open for ceasefire talks—even as Kremlin rhetoric hints at renewed offensives along the northeastern border.
