The External Affairs Minister said that the seriousness of the situation prompted the Cabinet Committee on Security to meet on 1 March under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday outlined India’s position regarding the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to reduce rising tensions in the region. Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar said that the Indian government is closely monitoring the evolving situation and taking necessary steps to safeguard national interests and the safety of Indian citizens living in the region.

Jaishankar said that the government had earlier issued a statement on 20 February expressing serious concern about the developments and urging all parties involved to exercise restraint. According to him India continues to believe that peaceful dialogue and diplomatic engagement remain the most effective ways to prevent further escalation and restore stability in the region.

He also informed Parliament that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is personally monitoring the situation as it unfolds. Relevant ministries within the government are working together to assess the developments and coordinate responses when necessary. This coordination is aimed at ensuring that India can effectively respond to any situation that might arise due to the conflict.

The External Affairs Minister said that the seriousness of the situation prompted the Cabinet Committee on Security to meet on 1 March under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. During the meeting officials were briefed about the airstrikes reported in Iran and the subsequent developments including attacks in several Gulf countries. The committee also discussed the possible implications of the conflict for India and the region.

One of the key concerns highlighted during the meeting was the safety and security of Indian citizens living in the Middle East. Jaishankar said that the region hosts a large Indian community and their well being remains a priority for the government. According to official estimates more than one crore Indians live and work in Gulf countries. In addition several thousand Indians are currently in Iran for education and employment.

The minister noted that the Middle East holds special importance for India not only because of the presence of Indian citizens but also because of the country’s economic and strategic interests. The region plays a significant role in India’s energy supply as it is home to many major exporters of crude oil and natural gas.

Any instability in the region could potentially affect global energy markets and disrupt supply chains. Jaishankar pointed out that such disruptions could have economic consequences not only for India but also for other countries dependent on energy imports from the Middle East.

He added that India has a strong interest in ensuring that West Asia remains peaceful and stable. Maintaining stability in the region is important for trade energy security and the welfare of millions of expatriate workers from India.

The government continues to maintain diplomatic contact with various countries involved in the region and is monitoring developments through its embassies and missions. Officials are also keeping a close watch on the safety of Indian nationals and are prepared to take necessary measures if the situation requires.

Jaishankar concluded that India hopes all sides involved in the conflict will choose diplomatic engagement and constructive dialogue to prevent further escalation. The government believes that peaceful negotiations remain the best path to restoring stability and protecting the interests of all nations in the region.

Jaishankar said that the government had earlier issued a statement on 20 February expressing serious concern about the developments and urging all parties involved to exercise restraint.
