In his address, Guterres stressed that reforming the UNSC is not merely a procedural exercise but a strategic necessity for maintaining global peace and security.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has reiterated the urgent need for reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), emphasizing that the council must evolve to reflect the geopolitical realities of the world in 2025 rather than those of 1945. Speaking on the international stage, Guterres highlighted India’s rising influence and described the country as a pivotal voice in shaping global security and diplomacy.

The UNSC, established in the aftermath of World War II, has often been criticized for its outdated structure, limited representation, and lack of inclusivity. According to Guterres, the current composition does not adequately reflect the emerging economic powers, regional stakeholders, and growing populations in parts of the world like Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He stressed that without reform, the council risks losing credibility in effectively addressing global crises, conflicts, and security challenges.

India, as the world’s most populous democracy and a significant contributor to United Nations peacekeeping missions, has long advocated for permanent membership in the council. Guterres underscored India’s contributions to global peace, stability, and development, noting that its inclusion as a permanent member would strengthen the legitimacy and functionality of the UNSC. He emphasized that India’s perspective is critical in shaping policies that address contemporary global challenges, including climate change, terrorism, cyber threats, and international conflicts.

The UN chief called upon member states to engage constructively in negotiations to modernize the council’s structure. He highlighted the importance of increasing representation from underrepresented regions, ensuring equitable participation in decision-making, and creating a more transparent and accountable council. Guterres also suggested reforms to the veto system, which currently allows the five permanent members to block resolutions, often hampering timely action on urgent crises.

In his address, Guterres stressed that reforming the UNSC is not merely a procedural exercise but a strategic necessity for maintaining global peace and security. He argued that a modernized council with inclusive representation would better reflect the diversity of the international community, enhance legitimacy, and foster cooperation among nations. Such reforms would allow the council to respond more effectively to the evolving challenges of the 21st century.

India’s growing influence in multilateral diplomacy, economic clout, and strategic partnerships make it a natural candidate to play a leading role in a reformed UNSC. Guterres emphasized that India’s voice is essential in advancing consensus-driven solutions and promoting equitable and sustainable approaches to international security.

The secretary-general concluded by urging the international community to act decisively and collaboratively, ensuring that the UNSC becomes a body capable of addressing the realities of the modern world. By supporting reforms and recognizing India’s pivotal role, he signaled a step toward a more inclusive and representative global governance framework.

Guterres emphasized that India’s voice is essential in advancing consensus-driven solutions and promoting equitable and sustainable approaches to international security.
