The European Union has indicated a significant strengthening of its relationship with India, describing the country as an increasingly indispensable partner for Europe’s economic stability and strategic interests. The remarks come ahead of an important visit to New Delhi by the President of the European Commission and the President of the European Council.
Speaking in the European Parliament on Wednesday, Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, said that Europe is prepared to deliver on a powerful and forward-looking agenda with India. She highlighted that the European Union views India as a crucial partner in a rapidly changing global environment marked by geopolitical uncertainty, security challenges, and economic realignments.
Kallas confirmed that the European Union has agreed to move forward with the signing of a new Security and Defence Partnership with India. The proposed agreement is expected to significantly expand cooperation between the two sides in areas such as maritime security, counterterrorism, cyber defence, and strategic intelligence sharing. According to her, the partnership reflects the growing trust and convergence of interests between the EU and India.
“I look forward to signing it next week during the EU India Summit in New Delhi,” Kallas told lawmakers, underlining the importance of the upcoming talks. The summit is expected to bring together top leadership from both sides to discuss a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, climate action, technology cooperation, and regional security.
The European Union has increasingly focused on diversifying its global partnerships as it seeks to reduce strategic dependencies and strengthen economic resilience. In this context, India is seen as a vital partner due to its large market, growing manufacturing base, technological capabilities, and strategic position in the Indo-Pacific region.
Kallas noted that India’s role is not limited to economic cooperation alone. She stressed that shared democratic values, commitment to international law, and mutual interest in maintaining a rules-based global order form the foundation of deeper EU India engagement. The new security and defence partnership is expected to complement existing frameworks of cooperation and enhance coordination on global and regional challenges.
Officials familiar with the discussions said the comprehensive deal under consideration could also pave the way for progress in long-pending trade negotiations. While details of the broader agreement have not been officially disclosed, diplomatic sources indicate that both sides are keen to show tangible outcomes during the high-profile visit to New Delhi.
The upcoming EU India Summit is being closely watched by global observers, as it could signal a shift in Europe’s strategic priorities toward stronger engagement with India. For New Delhi, deeper cooperation with the European Union offers opportunities to boost trade, attract investment, and strengthen its global diplomatic standing.
As global power dynamics continue to evolve, the EU’s message underscores India’s growing influence on the world stage and Europe’s intention to position the partnership as a central pillar of its foreign and security policy.
