Naomi Layzell made a remarkable debut in the Women's Champions League, playing a key role in Manchester City's 2-0 victory over defending champions Barcelona. The 20-year-old, who joined from Bristol City in the summer, shone brightly at the Joie Stadium, contributing both a goal and an assist in a memorable performance. Layzell, playing out of position at right-back instead of her usual centre-back role, opened the scoring in the 35th minute, converting from close range after Vivianne Miedema's header set her up from a corner.
City, returning to the competition for the first time since their quarter-final exit against Barcelona in 2021, faced an early scare when Caroline Hansen's shot hit the post just three minutes in. Barcelona, known for their attacking dominance, tested City’s defence throughout the game, particularly in the second half. Despite Barcelona’s pressure, including their 17 shots compared to City’s 13, Gareth Taylor's side held on for a crucial win, finishing the match with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.68 to Barcelona's 1.5.
The victory places City level on points with Hammarby in Group D, following Hammarby’s 2-0 win over Austria's St. Polten earlier in the day. Layzell’s performance drew praise from manager Gareth Taylor, who highlighted her adaptability and maturity despite playing out of position in such a high-stakes game.
Meanwhile, in Group C, Juventus began their Champions League campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Valerenga, thanks to Sofia Cantore’s first-half strike, as the competition continues to deliver thrilling encounters.
