Israel Announces Immediate Cut in Engagement With Select UN Bodies, Cites Bias

In a statement shared by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said that the review concluded certain UN agencies and international bodies had consistently adopted unfair positions against Israel.

Israel has declared that it will immediately sever all contact with several United Nations agencies and international organisations, a move that reflects growing diplomatic tensions between Jerusalem and parts of the multilateral system. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Gideon Sa’ar, who cited long-standing concerns over bias, politicisation, and actions perceived as hostile toward Israel.

According to Sa’ar, the decision followed an in-depth review conducted by the Israeli government in the aftermath of the United States’ recent withdrawal from dozens of international organisations. Israeli officials examined the list of bodies named in the US decision and assessed Israel’s own experience with these institutions over the years.

In a statement shared by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said that the review concluded certain UN agencies and international bodies had consistently adopted unfair positions against Israel. Officials argued that these organisations had deviated from their original mandates and had instead become platforms for political pressure and selective criticism.

The ministry emphasised that Israel’s decision does not represent a rejection of international cooperation as a whole, but rather a targeted response to institutions it believes have compromised their neutrality. “Israel will not cooperate with frameworks that act in a discriminatory or politically motivated manner,” the statement said.

The move comes at a time of heightened global debate over the role and credibility of international organisations. Israel has frequently accused several UN bodies of singling it out while failing to adequately address violations by other actors. Similar concerns have been raised in the past by the United States, which recently announced its withdrawal from multiple global forums citing inefficiency and political bias.

Diplomatic experts note that Israel’s decision could have broader implications for its engagement with multilateral institutions, especially those involved in humanitarian, legal, and political affairs. While Israel maintains relations with the United Nations at large, limiting interaction with specific agencies may affect coordination on international resolutions and aid mechanisms.

Critics of the move argue that disengagement could reduce Israel’s ability to influence decisions from within these bodies. Supporters, however, say the step sends a strong message against what they describe as institutional prejudice and reinforces Israel’s demand for fair treatment on the global stage.

The Israeli government has not yet publicly released the full list of UN agencies and international organisations affected by the decision. Officials indicated that further details would be shared as the policy is implemented.

As geopolitical divisions deepen, Israel’s decision highlights the increasing strain between nation-states and international institutions, raising questions about the future effectiveness of global multilateral cooperation.

Supporters, however, say the step sends a strong message against what they describe as institutional prejudice and reinforces Israel’s demand for fair treatment on the global stage.
