A major train derailment in southern Mexico has claimed at least 13 lives and left close to 100 people injured, marking one of the deadliest rail accidents in the country in recent years. The incident occurred on Sunday in the state of Oaxaca, involving an Interoceanic train operating on a route that has recently seen multiple safety incidents.
According to official statements from the Mexican Navy, the train was carrying approximately 250 people at the time of the derailment. This included nine crew members and 241 passengers. Authorities confirmed that while 193 passengers were reported to be out of danger, 98 people suffered injuries, with 36 of them requiring ongoing medical treatment at nearby hospitals.
Emergency services and rescue teams were deployed immediately following the accident. Medical personnel, police, and military units worked through the aftermath to evacuate passengers, provide first aid, and transport the injured to healthcare facilities. Several passengers sustained serious injuries due to the force of the derailment, as carriages reportedly overturned and slid off the tracks.
Videos circulating on social media showed damaged train coaches and distressed passengers at the accident site, drawing widespread attention and concern. Officials have urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid sharing unconfirmed visuals while rescue and investigation efforts continue.
The derailment comes just days after another incident on the same rail route. On December 20, a train collided with a cargo truck that was attempting to cross the tracks, raising questions about safety protocols and infrastructure management along the corridor. While authorities have not officially linked the two incidents, the proximity in timing has intensified scrutiny of railway operations in the region.
The Interoceanic Corridor is considered a key transport route in southern Mexico, designed to boost regional connectivity and economic activity. However, experts have pointed out that increased traffic on the route requires stronger safety measures, improved signaling systems, and stricter enforcement at railway crossings.
An official investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Preliminary assessments are expected to examine track conditions, train speed, technical failures, and operational procedures. Authorities have assured that accountability will be fixed once the investigation is complete.
Mexican government officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and stated that all necessary support would be provided to those injured. Compensation and rehabilitation measures are also expected to be announced in the coming days.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the importance of railway safety, particularly on routes witnessing rising passenger movement. As investigations continue, calls are growing for comprehensive safety audits and preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
