The announcement was made by Sovereignty's trainer and ownership team, who released a joint statement citing the horse’s health and recovery as top priorities.

In a major development for the horse racing world, Sovereignty, the winner of the 2025 Kentucky Derby, will not participate in the Preakness Stakes scheduled to take place later this month. The unexpected decision has effectively ended hopes of a Triple Crown victory this year, a rare and coveted achievement in American horse racing.

The announcement was made by Sovereignty's trainer and ownership team, who released a joint statement citing the horse’s health and recovery as top priorities. They explained that while Sovereignty emerged victorious at Churchill Downs, the demanding race took a toll on the three-year-old colt, and skipping the Preakness is a precautionary measure intended to preserve his long-term racing career.

"After a thorough evaluation by our veterinary and training team, we believe it is in Sovereignty's best interest to rest and recover," said the statement. "While we understand the disappointment, our decision is made with the future in mind."

The Triple Crown, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes, is one of the most difficult feats in sports. Only 13 horses have achieved the title, the most recent being Justify in 2018. Sovereignty’s commanding win at the Derby had raised expectations among fans and analysts alike, who saw potential in the horse’s combination of speed, stamina, and temperament.

Industry experts have expressed both surprise and support for the decision. Many have noted that skipping the Preakness is increasingly common among top horses who win the Derby but face physical strain or health concerns. Prioritizing a horse’s wellbeing over the pursuit of historic milestones is a growing trend that reflects evolving standards in the sport.

The absence of Sovereignty from the Preakness opens up the field for other contenders. Trainers of other top finishers from the Derby are now preparing their horses to seize the opportunity at Pimlico Race Course. This also means the Belmont Stakes, traditionally the final and most grueling leg of the Triple Crown, will not carry the same anticipation of a potential historic win.

Despite the setback, Sovereignty's team hinted at a return later this summer, possibly targeting other major races like the Travers Stakes or the Breeders’ Cup. The colt remains a strong prospect for end-of-year awards and long-term racing success.

Fans of the sport have responded with mixed emotions. While many express disappointment at the lost opportunity to witness a potential Triple Crown champion, others commend the responsible approach taken by the ownership team. Social media is filled with supportive messages, hoping for Sovereignty's full recovery and a strong return to competition.

As the Preakness Stakes approaches without its star contender, the race remains wide open and filled with anticipation. While Sovereignty’s Triple Crown journey ends here, the horse’s future in racing continues to hold promise.

"After a thorough evaluation by our veterinary and training team, we believe it is in Sovereignty's best interest to rest and recover," said the statement.
