Despite this claim, police said they are treating the matter seriously due to the nature of the target and the manner in which the incident occurred.

New York City police are investigating a possible hate crime after a vehicle was driven repeatedly into the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn on Wednesday night. The incident occurred in the Crown Heights neighbourhood, a historic and religious centre for the Hasidic Jewish community.

According to police officials, the incident took place shortly before 9 pm when a grey Honda sedan entered the driveway of the religious complex. The car struck the building’s entrance, reversed, and then rammed into the doorway multiple times. Officers stationed at a fixed police post at the site immediately intervened and took the driver into custody.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed at a news conference that no injuries were reported. She said the driver was arrested at the scene and that an investigation was underway to determine whether the act was motivated by hate or bias.

Eyewitnesses told local authorities that the driver was known in the area and had been seen previously around Jewish religious sites, often asking for help. These accounts are being reviewed as part of the investigation, though police have not confirmed any prior incidents involving the suspect.

Law enforcement officials said the driver, whose identity has not been made public, told police that the incident was not an attack. Authorities added that the individual has been cooperating with investigators. Despite this claim, police said they are treating the matter seriously due to the nature of the target and the manner in which the incident occurred.

The Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters holds deep significance for Jewish communities worldwide and regularly has police protection due to past threats and security concerns. The presence of officers at the location helped ensure a swift response and prevented further damage or injuries.

CNN reported that police are examining surveillance footage, vehicle damage, and witness statements to establish intent. Investigators are also assessing whether the act qualifies as a hate crime under New York law, which would require evidence that the site was deliberately targeted because of its religious identity.

Community leaders in Crown Heights expressed relief that no one was harmed but said the incident has caused concern among residents. Jewish organisations have called for a thorough investigation and increased vigilance around religious institutions.

Police officials stated that additional security measures may be reviewed as a precaution while the investigation continues. No charges have been announced so far, and authorities said further updates would be shared once more information becomes available.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officials emphasised that determining motive will be key in deciding how the case proceeds.
