India voiced strong concerns over the worsening situation in West Asia during the BRICS conclave, warning that continuing geopolitical tensions could seriously affect global energy supplies, maritime stability, and economic security. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed the issue during the opening session of the two-day BRICS meeting and called for practical cooperation among member nations to handle growing international challenges.
Speaking at the conclave, Jaishankar stated that respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity must remain central to international relations. He emphasised that dialogue and diplomacy are the only sustainable methods for resolving conflicts and maintaining global peace.
India particularly highlighted concerns regarding the situation in West Asia, including tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Jaishankar noted that instability in the region continues to threaten maritime trade routes and energy infrastructure, both of which are crucial for the global economy.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil transportation. Any disruption in the region can directly affect international energy markets and fuel prices. India, being one of the world’s largest energy importers, closely monitors developments in the Gulf region because of their potential impact on domestic fuel supplies and economic stability.
Jaishankar also raised concerns about what he described as unilateral coercive sanctions and their broader impact on global economic systems. He urged BRICS nations to work together in finding balanced and practical approaches to international crises while promoting stability and cooperation.
The BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has increasingly focused on global political and economic issues in recent years.
