Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday as part of her three day official visit to India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed his Japanese counterpart before the two leaders proceeded with engagements aimed at strengthening the India Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
The ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan reflected the importance of the bilateral relationship between India and Japan. Following the welcome ceremony, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Takaichi introduced members of their respective ministerial delegations before holding formal discussions on key areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Takaichi is visiting India from July 1 to July 3 at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi. The visit includes participation in the 16th India Japan Annual Summit, an annual meeting that provides both countries with an opportunity to review progress in bilateral cooperation and discuss regional and global developments.
The summit agenda includes discussions on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, infrastructure, defence, semiconductors, critical minerals, clean energy, digital technologies, and supply chain resilience. Both countries are also expected to exchange views on regional security, the Indo Pacific region, and global economic developments.
India and Japan have maintained a close strategic partnership for several years, with cooperation extending across multiple sectors. Japan remains one of India's largest foreign investors and has supported several major infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor. The two countries also work together on emerging technologies, manufacturing, logistics, and maritime security.
Economic cooperation is expected to remain a major focus of this year's summit. Officials from both countries are likely to discuss ways to increase bilateral trade, encourage greater Japanese investment in India, and strengthen collaboration in advanced manufacturing and innovation. Semiconductor production, critical mineral supply chains, and renewable energy are among the sectors receiving increased attention.
Defence and security cooperation are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions. India and Japan continue to work together in promoting a free, open, and inclusive Indo Pacific region while expanding cooperation through bilateral and multilateral platforms. The leaders are expected to review ongoing defence exchanges and maritime cooperation initiatives.
The India Japan Annual Summit serves as an important platform for reviewing progress made since previous meetings and identifying new areas for collaboration. Officials from both governments are expected to announce outcomes following the conclusion of the summit.
