United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has emphasized that the strength of India–United States defence relations should be judged by the depth of bilateral cooperation rather than administrative or symbolic changes. His remarks came while responding to questions regarding the naming of the United States Indo Pacific Command and its significance for the strategic relationship between the two countries.
Speaking on the issue, Ambassador Gor said that the name associated with a military command is less important than the practical cooperation that continues between India and the United States. He stressed that defence ties have expanded steadily over the years through regular military engagement, joint exercises, technology cooperation and strategic dialogue.
The ambassador noted that India and the United States continue to work closely on a wide range of defence and security matters. Bilateral cooperation includes joint military exercises, defence training programmes, information sharing, maritime security initiatives and collaboration in defence technology. According to him, these areas of cooperation demonstrate the strength of the relationship more clearly than changes in administrative terminology.
India and the United States have significantly strengthened their strategic partnership over the past two decades. Defence cooperation has become one of the central pillars of bilateral relations, supported by regular high-level meetings, defence agreements and expanding collaboration across the armed forces of both countries.
The two nations also participate in several joint military exercises involving the Army, Navy and Air Force. These exercises are designed to improve interoperability, strengthen operational coordination and enhance preparedness for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and regional security challenges.
Ambassador Gor stated that the broader strategic partnership continues to evolve based on shared interests, including maintaining peace, stability and security in the Indo Pacific region. He indicated that both governments remain committed to expanding cooperation in areas such as defence manufacturing, advanced technologies, maritime awareness and regional security.
Officials from both countries have repeatedly described the India–United States relationship as one of increasing strategic importance. Recent years have witnessed growing collaboration in defence production, supply chain resilience, emerging technologies and intelligence cooperation. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening long-term security cooperation while supporting mutual strategic interests.
The ambassador's remarks also reflected the view that institutional or administrative changes should not be interpreted as altering the overall direction of bilateral relations. Instead, he suggested that the practical outcomes of defence engagement provide a more accurate measure of the partnership.
India and the United States continue to hold regular strategic dialogues through various bilateral mechanisms covering defence, foreign policy, trade and technology. Senior officials from both governments have consistently reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation in areas that contribute to regional and global stability.
